The purpose of this study is to investigate the aim and criteria of teacher evaluation through exploring teachers' experiences in being evaluated by elementary school students. The subjects of this study were 15 elementary school teachers who, by their own initiative, were given the teacher evaluation by their class students. In order to gather the research data, narrative questionnaires were filled out by the subjects four times and evaluation papers were collected. In addition, interviews were conducted.
The three major results of this research were as follows:
First, 'Compliments.' Teachers were praised for their efforts from students and received these compliments as internal compensation. The good words motivated teachers to educate more enthusiastically and also gave them opportunities to advance their opinions, plans, and activities to be more in alignment with their educational beliefs. The compliments afforded proof that the teachers have positive influences on their students. Therefore, this shows the experience of receiving compliments aids in teachers' growth.
Second, 'Whip.' The teachers’ mistakes were pointed out to them by their students. Students criticized and held their teacher's responsible for their actions. When first-time teachers were criticized, they felt not only shame but also bitterness toward the students. Nevertheless, although teachers had been subject to negative words many times before, as they acquired experience they were able to reflect on their behavior and to listen humbly to the voices of the students.
Third, 'Relationships.' Teachers experienced closer relationships with their students after the evaluation. Being close with their students is what the teachers really want. On the teacher evaluation papers, teachers gained much information about their students. Even though students only wrote about personal wishes to the teacher, their writing contained much meaningful information about the students themselves. As teachers responded thoughtfully and attentively to their students’ evaluations, this helped to create the better relationships between the teacher and his or her students. In addition, teachers also were able to build trust in their students by responding to their requests. Eventually, teachers were able to form a higher quality relationship with their students.
The meanings of the above three results can be linked to the teachers' practical knowledge. Because those meanings were formed through day-to-day experiences with students in real classrooms, those meanings could complement the teachers’ practical knowledge of teacher evaluations.
Based on the given meanings, the aim and criteria were able to be confirmed.
First, the aim of teacher evaluations should place the focus on the teachers' growth. Teacher evaluations should promote and stimulate teachers' professional development. As the study shows, the initiative and individual evaluation had a great influence on the teachers’ growth and perspective. Therefore, teacher evaluations have to go beyond accountability, such as an evaluation that only grade teachers by comparing one to another, and turn toward a more educative evaluation in order to promote professional development.
Second, the criteria of teacher evaluations are established based on the components inherent in teacher growth and professionalism. From the results of the three experiences of this study, practical evaluation criteria should include the following: (a) recognition of the teachers’ influence on students, (b) teachers’ self reflection, (c) teachers’ regard for the students, (d) teachers’ thoughtfulness and use of pedagogical tact when interacting with students.
