The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the art instruction using ARCS model on development or maintenance of learning motivation. According to the purpose, the hypotheses are establised as follows
1. There will be significant differences in the scores of learning motivation measure between the experimental and the comparative group.
2. There will be significant differences in the scores of learner's Attention measure between the experimental and the comparative group.
3. There will be significant differences in the scores of learner's Relevance measure between the experimental and the comparative group.
4. There will be significant differences in the scores of learner's Confidence measure between the experimental and the comparative group.
5. There will be significant differences in the scores of learner's Satisfaction measure between the experimental and the comparative group.
In order to verify the above hypotheses, two third grade's classes of S-elementary school located in Yang San-Si, Gung Sang Nam - Do were selected and allocated to the experimental and the comparative group. The experimental group was treated with the instruction using ARCS model while the comparative was treated with general instruction for four weeks. Two groups were taught by a teacher in charge and any other variables were not controlled. To examine of the same quality of the two classes in motivational degree of art instruction , the instrument used in the study was a CIS(Course Interest Survey) by J, M, Keller. CIS was reconstructed properly for third grade students. T-test was used to recognize the significant differences between the two groups. According to the results of t-test, there was not a significant difference(t=.090, p>.05), so the two groups was identified as the same quality group. CIS and t-test were used to examine hypotheses after four weeks' experiments.
The results of this study were as follows:
There was some significant difference in the average scores of learning motivation measure between the experimental and the comparative group(t=6.191, p<.05). Also, there were significant difference in attention(t=6.761, p<.05), relevance(t=5.150, p<.05), confidence(t=5.289, p<.05) and satisfaction(t=4.147, p<.05). Therefore, the hypotheses were accepted and the art instruction using ARCS model showed the effect of improvement in the learning motivation.
Finally, the conclusion of this study is as follows:
First, the experimental group using ARCS model is much effective than the comparative group in the art learning motivation.
Second, the experimental group using ARCS model is still efficient than the comparative group in terms of the students' attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction.
According to the comparison of the two groups in the aspect of academic achievement, there was no meaningful difference. But the experimental group showed more plentiful products. This result showed the matter of academic achievement cannot be achieved in a short term. And we know that the learner is eager to act in the well-motivated atmosphere. The result shows that using ARCS model is more desirable to motivate the learner than to improve the learner's achievement. But it is need to study that the long-term input of ARCS model effect learning motivation permanently.
