The purpose of this study is to construct and implement a program utilizing in group counseling for middle school students in the rural areas and assess and validate its effect on their career maturity.
Main objectives are as follows : developing an effective way to construct the program for middle school students in the rural areas to participate in group counseling; validating its effect on the career maturity. For this research, twenty-four volunteered 3^(th) graders from 'M' Middle School located in a township of the Chungcheong area. They were divided into two groups; 12 in the experimental group and 12 the control group.
This program is based on Consultation Program Development Model by Park In-u(1995). The implementation of the program was presided over by the writer of this report and was conducted two times per week from September 2 through October 21, totalling 15 sessions.
The test tool was 'Career Maturity Test(CMT)' of Yim, In Jae and Kim, Bong Hwan (2008). For data processing, 'Mixed ANOVA' from SPSS/Window 12 was used to analyze statistical results, and analysis of experience reports and counselor observation contents was also indicated to supplement the limitations of quantitative results.
The results obtained from this research are as follows.
First, there were significant differences in improvements of the career maturity in those who participated in the programs when compared to the students that did not part participate.
Second, in the analysis of the individual subfactors of the program the 'certainty', 'career information literacy', and 'reality compromise' of the control group were significantly different from the control group.
Third, from the results of the analysis of the experience report and the counselor observation, it can be stated that this program had positive impact on improving the career maturity
The fact that this research provided a group counseling program that is suitable for the characteristics of middle school students in rural areas, therefore allowing the students to be more aggressive and positive about their career and providing the basic information for career guidance is where it finds its importance.
For the follow-up study in the future, the following recommendations are suggested based on the research results described. First, career search, construct a system which if there were controversies between the objective data and the subjective understanding one can solve them on his or her own, but if that is not sufficient, have the option to consult someone individually.
Second, if the subjects are third year middle school students either divide the students into groups who are interested in the specialized fields, the general fields, and undecided or have the equivalent ratio of students from three areas in one group as that will allow them to better understand and accept others and oneself.
Third, the group counseling program designed to improve the career maturity of middle school students in rural areas will have a synergy effect if the school, the community, and the family all get involved.
