The purpose of this research is to present problems after having analyzed actual status of experience activities in the information and communication technology education conducted in middle and high schools, and to develop the experience activity tasks to be utilized for understanding of the concepts in the chapter, ‘The Utilization of Information and Communication Technology’ in the 2007 revised curriculum for 8th graders.
This research was conducted through such processes as selection of the themes for experience activity tasks, establishment of a model for concept learning, initial development of experience tasks, and improvement of experience tasks.
In the stage of theme selection, the theme for experience activity tasks was selected based on analysis of the chapter, ‘The Utilization of Information and Communication Technology.’
In the model establishment stage for concept learning, the model for concept learning was created, considering the distinctive features and procedures of concept learning based on the principle of four factors: education contents, teaching and learning process, learning environments, and outcomes.
As for initial development of experience tasks, the researcher selected learning goal according to themes, learning contents, and learning experience, and organized accordingly to the base of the concept learning model that developed.
In the stage of improvement of experience tasks, the researcher revised and complemented those experience activity tasks that developed through verification carried out by experts and on-site tests. The experience activity tasks developed in this research are as follows:
In order to select the contents of experience activities for concept learning, the researcher classified those major concepts that appeared in the chapter, which is concerned with the utilization of information and communication technology, making use of the classification standards that were presented in the information and communication technology domain of the 2007 revised curriculum, such as telecommunication, graphic communication, and modern communication process. Based on the instruction model, the researcher selected binary number and sound expression as experience themes for telecommunication, and image expression as experience theme for graphic communication, and compress as experience theme for modern communication process, and total five kinds of experience theme for error detection, and constituted it with six kinds of procedure, including obtaining concepts, sharing, applying concepts, and formative evaluation.
The results of this research revealed that the developed experience activity tasks had the following characteristics.
First, the developed experience activity tasks targeted the 8th-grade students; however, these tasks can be applied in to other grades a flexible manner, including discretional activity, extra curriculum, and technology camp.
Second, a model for concept learning having considered four factors from the perspective of education contents, teaching and learning process, learning environments, and outcomes, was established, and, through this work, the researcher built a foundation for developing experience activity tasks.
Third, the researcher intended to make learners accomplish their learning goal related to concept understanding naturally during the process of solving problems by themselves having applied the concepts they obtained through more specific experiences than the learning that they have to accept the given learning goal and contents passively to real situation, and also organized it so much as to motivate learners throughout whole procedures of experience activity.
Fourth, the researcher organized the developed experience activity tasks in order that students could participate in discussions or debates, and cooperative learning through whole group, small group, and individual learning, as well as self-directed learning, and, with development of experience activity tasks on the base of the concept learning model, the researcher took account of time economy in transforming and organizing the learning when teachers prepare for instructions.
Fifth, to increase applicability of the experience activity tasks that developed through literature investigation to the locale of education, the researcher developed the experience activity tasks having got through appropriate improvement procedures, including verification carried out by experts and preliminary test as well.
The materials related to experiences that presented in this research paper was developed on the base of the contents of the 2007 revised curriculum, so then it can be used as materials for experience activities.
