The purpose of this study was to examine factors affecting the turnover intention of caregivers who took care of elderly patients on behalf of their families at hong-term care hospitals in the region of Daejeon, as one of typical family functions to provide care to elderly people was waning.
The purpose of this study was to examine factors affecting the turnover intention of caregivers who took care of elderly patients on behalf of their families at hong-term care hospitals in the region of Daejeon, as one of typical family functions to provide care to elderly people was waning.
Three categories of factors were selected as what might affect the turnover intention of caregivers: demographic characteristics, job-related characteristics and working environment characteristics. And three research questions were posed:
1. What is the turnover intention of caregivers?
2. What differences do the demographic, job-related and working environment characteristics of caregivers make to their turnover intention?
3. What impact do the demographic, job-related and working environment characteristics of caregivers have on their turnover intention?
The subjects in this study were caregivers who were selected by purposive sampling from 10 different long-term care hospitals in five districts in the city of Daejeon involving Dong-gu, Jung-gu, Seo-gu, Yooseong-gu and Daedeok-gu.
The collected data were analyzed with SPSS 12.0 program, and statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained. One-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression procedures were utilized, and the answer sheets from 149 respondents were analyzed except 50 incomplete ones. The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, the caregivers investigated got 2.69 on turnover intention, which was below the average. It seemed to show that they didn't have any specific plans to quit their job yet had some vague expectations for that.
Second, as for connections between the characteristics of the care- givers and turnover intention, their turnover intention was significantly different according to academic credential, subjective living standard, and subjective heath status, which were all demographic characteristics. In the event of job-related features, job satisfaction and relationship with other members made a significant difference to that. Out of working environment characteristics, working hours made a significant difference to that.
Third, as a result of checking into what factors affected their turnover intention, job satisfaction, education and subjective health state had a great impact on that.
The above-mentioned findings suggested that the caregivers got to think of quitting their job under the influence of the interaction between demographic and job-related characteristics. To ensure the job stability of caregivers, programs geared toward improving their job satisfaction should be prepared, and caregiver education and on-the-job training should be taken to another level. And caregivers should be assisted to promote their health
