Married migrant women by international marriage hope to live a better life in Korea. However, they often experience prejudice and discrimination as alien in Korean society and they are often swept by confusion and cultural shock by cultural difference. In Korean society, where nationalism have been very strong, married migrant women are apt to experience acculturative stress and it can lead to low self-esteem. So, in this study, I want to find out how group art therapy can have an effect on reducing acculaturative stress and increasing self-esteem.
For the purpose of the study, I operated group art therapy with the married migrant women who attended the Korean language course in the beginners class in the married migrant women's support center, located in Gyeonggi province. The participants of this study were all 16 people. Eight of them are for experimental group and the other eight of them are for controlled group. I operated the group art therapy ten sessions with the experimental group once or twice a week with 60 minutes per each session from 23th September to 30th October 2008.
For the purpose of the study, I used the Sandhu and Asrabadi(1994)'s Acculturative Stress Scale and Rosenberg(1996)'s Self-esteem Scale, which were translated in Chinese language and Vietnamese language.
The results of this study are followed.
First, total acculturative stress scores and in the subfactors-perceived sense of home sickness, perceived sense of difference, perceived hatred, guilty are significantly reduced in the experimental group who had a group art therapy as far as result on how group art therapy has an effect on reducing on married migrant women's acculturative stress, but nothing is significantly increased in the controlled group.
Second, self-esteem scores are significantly increased in the experimental group who had a group art therapy as far as result on how group art therapy has an effect on increasing on married migrant women's self-esteem, but nothing is significantly increased in the controlled group.
As a result of this study, the group art therapy shows a positive effect on reducing acculturative stress and increasing self-esteem for married migrant women. Therefore, a group art therapy can have desired which can be used as a tool to reduce acculturative stress and to increase self-esteem for married migrant women. In result, this study will be a ground to help married migrant women reduce acculturative stress and increase self-esteem through the group art therapy. This study will also be one of the data to help married migrant women make Korean cultural adjustments and live as healthy adults in Korean society.
