The present study verified the efficacy of the runaway prevention program, Youth Empowerment Start Project (here after referred to as YES Project), a project that aims to reinforce protective factors for high-risk runaway Adolescents currently in the 8^(th) grade.
The purpose of the study was primarily to apply risk factors probable to increase the runaway impulse as the measure for selection of high-risk runaway adolescents and to develop a runaway prevention program of protective factor components that absorbs the risk factors. The study also sought to evaluate and verify the efficacy of the overall course of progress of the runaway prevention program through various analysis methods in a systematic and substantiative manner. In order to generalize intervention upon Adolescents runaways on the front of social welfare prevention, Demonstration Model of Risk Behavior of Runaway, a theoretical model exhibited by Han(2004) based on Developmental Model of Risk Behavior presented by Selman(1992), was applied in the study to develop the prevention program using the intervention research method and proved the efficacy of the program.
23 voluntary adolescents from a high-risk runaway group selected through the 16 Personality Factor Ⅱ and instructor observation evaluations were the subjects in the study. 22 remaining adolescents in the group who did not participate in the research were allocated as a comparison group. The total sample consisted of 45 adolescents.
Descriptive statistics, T-test, and ANCOVA were computed as the analysis method for hypothesis testing and to analyze statistical verification. As a means to complement individual efficacy, goal-attainment scaling, single subject design method, and process analysis, following a process recording of the sample program, were additionally used.
The results demonstrate that the participating adolescents from the sample displayed significant improvement regarding self-efficacy, locus of internal control, social problem-solving skills, and family cohesion in comparison to the comparative group, upholding hypothesis1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5. In spite of minor improvement in ex ante and ex post testing, lack of statistical significance with respect to self-conviction and parent-child communication led to the dismissal of hypothesis1-1, 1-6. The results also establish that the participating subjects of the study exhibited significant decrease regarding 'Runaway Impulse Ⅰ' and 'Runaway Impulse Ⅱ' than the comparative group of high-risk runaway adolescents. Research hypothesis2 was confirmed accordingly. The single subject research method reveal that the 23 participating individuals of the testing group showed differences in terms of the degree and the pattern of improvement, yet the overall level of runaway impulse has been reduced. There was a decrease in the runaway impulse level among 19 subjects and an increase in 1 subject. 3 subjects displayed no change, confirming hypothesis2. The research results demonstrate the YES Project as a runaway prevention program that reinforces the protective factors which reduce runaway impulse levels, resolve runaway impulses of high-risk runaway Adolescents group, and ultimately prevent runaways.
The importance of the present study is highlighted in diverse respects. By implementing studies of previous research, multilateral assessment of needs, and focus group to the complete process of developing the YES Project, the reliability and the adequacy of the program was confirmed. Au contraire to previous research(Um, 1996; Lee & Kim, 1999; Lee, 2005; Park, 2008: 112) on Adolescents runaway, which in large focused on an ex post measure treatment program for the prevention of subsequent runaways, this is an explorative research that attempted to verify the efficacy of a runaway prevention program for typical adolescents selected as high-risk runaway Adolescents. A comparative group of homogeneous subjects have been allocated through the 16 Personality Factor Ⅱ. The forte of this research lies in the application of triangulation that enriched the reliability of the results through simultaneous applications of various methods in order to avoid the overlap of elements that adversely affect the adequacy of research. The efficacy of the program has been demonstrated on multilateral fronts through statistical, visual, and substantive significance and clinical practical evaluation. This study also evaluated the practicality of a social welfare prevention program that reduces the probability of Adolescents runaway through managing a series of phases and progress of activities with the application of the intervention research method. Through this research, a realistic and specific intervention manual was developed and the feasibility of generalizing a manual that is based on clinical practical evaluation was pursued.
For a follow-up research of the present study, students between elementary school grade 5 and 6 to middle school grade 7 and 8 with an experience of minimally 1 runaway impulse would be appropriate as the subjects of study. The development of individualized service and classification of a runaway prevention program upon the different types of risk factors of Adolescents runaway is also proposed. Adolescent runaway, being the consequence of a complex interaction of individual, family, and school, as a distinct multi-factor field calls for the need of a verification research of a runaway prevention model from a ecological-developmental perspective. Research for constant development of a preemptive prevention program on various protective factors should be conducted. As a means to solve ethical issues, testing groups should be assembled in cooperation with schools whilst comparative groups are allocated as a waitlist control group and provided with the same program following the conclusion of the test.
