This study was carried out to find out the specific correlation between initiative and study accomplishment in science curriculums for middle school. The result was analyzed into four parts-whole subjects, gender, accomplishment degree(25% superior, 25% inferior of all the subjects), initiative degree. The study was conducted to 78students in the third grade at O middle school, Ulsankwangyeok-shi. Study accomplishment in science curriculums was analyzed into paper-and-pencil test and performance assessment. In performance assessment, the numerical value was used in total of subjective evaluation(30%), report evaluation(20%), question paper (50%). The collected data was analyzed in correlation of SPSS 12.O for windows. The following is the result of the study.
First, in initiative and performance assessment, .362 of static correlation is showed at the 1% of significance level. It means that initiative and performance assessment has more meaningful correlation in initiative and paper-and-pencil test.
Second, in the experimental group by sex, male student group's initiative and performance assessment indicates .245 correlation which is higher than initiative and paper-and-pencil test. The same is true for female student group. Its initiative and performance assessment indicates correlation that is higher than initiative and paper-and-pencil test.
As a result, it is showed that female group has more meaningful correlation than male group in initiative and paper-and-pencil test. And both groups have higher correlation in initiative and performance assessment than that in initiative and paper-and-pencil test.
Third, initiative and performance assessment shows correlation of superior 25% which has higher value, compared to that of initiative and paper-and-pencil test. Initiative and performance assessment of inferior 25% shows correlation which is more meaningful correlation than initiative and paper-and-pencil test. In initiative and performance assessment, the correlation of superior 25% is high than that of inferior 25%.
Forth, on the basis of initiative score, both superior and inferior groups have higher correlation in initiative and performance assessment than in initiative and paper-and-pencil test. However the relation is meaningless because the value is within the extent of meaningless correlation.
On the basis of the above result, initiative and performance assessment has more meaningful relationship than initiative and paper-and-pencil test. And both of them have a positive affect on each other. therefore, performance assessment which considers each student's accomplishment and development level is more effective way to estimate various learning activity. It is helpful to increase initiative and self-determination learning. To increase creativity and capability of students, we should not focus on the learning which makes students memorize scientific knowledge but apply more effective teaching methods such as CPS(Creative Problem Solving) education module, in science education so that students can learn how to think creatively.
