This study attempted to prove the effects of parenting support provided to improve difficulties and solve problems of parenting by married female migrants focusing on parenting support. The aim of the study is to understand the reality of parenting support on married female migrants and to present plans for improvements along with verifying its efficacies.
The design of this study is composed of one basic line phase with single structure (AB) design and one intervention phase. During Aug 4 ~ 8 2008 interviews on subject families were conducted and established service plans and conducted preliminary research on parenting stress for studying problems and demands. Post research was conducted during Nov 3 ~ 7 2007 after providing service customized for family by visiting more than 20 times by parenting adviser. The subject for study is married female migrants parenting children under the age of 12 and total of 40 were interviewed - 20 from Wonju, 20 from Youngwol·Taebaek. Measuring tools were Parental Distress factors of Parenting Stress Index by Abidin (1990) and Parenting Daily Hassles (PHD) by Crnic and Greenberg (1990) and an index developed to measure parenting stress by Mann and Thornberg (1987), and compared pre·post changes by using Parenting Stress Index modified according to Korean situations by Kim Ki Hyun and Gang Hee Gyung (1997).
Studied nationality, level of Korean, monthly income per household, types of housing, receipt of social welfare payments, occupation of spouse, types of marriage for population social characteristics of study subjects. Age, age differences between couples, period of residence, number of children, average age of children, living together with mother-in-law among population social characteristics were set as control variables.
The results of analyzing provision of parenting support service showed that there were differences in consulting and information service area among 4 areas at 34.35 times for Wonju, 17.55 times of Youngwol·Taebaek. Thus, analyzed changes in parenting stress according to the classification into Wonju type (X₁) and Youngwol·Taebaek type (X₂).
The results of analysis showed that the parenting support project reduced parental stress from pre·post test on parenting stress. It reduced 'parenting stress in general' and reduced 'burden and stress on the role as a parent' among lower quartile and did not affect the reduction of ‘general stress caused by parenting;. Also, the results of analyzing by classifying into Wonju type (X₁) and Youngwol·Taebaek type (X₂) showed that Wonju type (X₁) was effective in reducing general parenting stress and sense of burden and stress of being parent among lower quartile while there was no change in Youngwol·Taebaek type (X₂). In comparison between pre·post taking control variables into consideration, parenting stress was reduced from both Wonju and Youngwol·Taebaek types when the age is in 20s, residence period of less than 36 months, child age below 2 years old, more than 16 years of age differences between husband and wife. On the other hand, parenting stress was reduced only from Wonju type when the age is in 30s or above, residence period of more than 37 months, mother-in-law is living together, more than 2 children, children age of more than 3 years old, the age differences between husband and wife is less than 15 years. Parenting stress was reduced from all variables in post comparison taking control variables into consideration in Wonju type.
Parenting support project for married female migrant was effective in reducing parenting stress through this study and the effectiveness of Wonju type service was proven where service in providing consulting and information was concentrated especially. Therefore, consulting and information service should be systemized among major service area when establishing service plans. Also, the competency of parenting adviser, the subject for providing service, should be enhanced to provide professional service according to the situation of subject family.
