Borderline Personality Disorder(BPD) is a complex illness characterized by the severe problems across the interpersonal, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional domains of functioning. Little attention has been paid to childhood and adolescence borderline pathology, because the mental health professionals have viewed personality as lacking in cohesiveness and durability prior to the age of 18. For many years, as a result, BPD has focused primarily on adults. Recently, however, a growing number of the researches have suggested that borderline personality disorder is recognizable in adolescence. On the basis of these concepts, this study puts focus on emotion dysregulation of adolescents with borderline personality features, since dysregulation of emotion is a core feature of borderline personality disorder.
In the Study 1, the characteristics of borderline personality are reviewed before constructing a concrete emotion dysregulation model. In implementing it the characteristics of borderline personality and psychopath with the objects of the 410 misdeed juveniles are compared considering the developmental characteristics of the juveniles. In case of borderline personality, as a result, the self-injury is confirmed as an important variable, and also it is confirmed that the associations with variables such as self-injury and depression, emotion avoidance thinking, anger experience, norm violation, negative emotion intensity, and emotion expression suppression can explain borderline personality very well. In case of psychopath, on the contrary, it is confirmed that the association with variables such as control belief in emotion control and self-injury, anger experience, negative self-concept in the aspects of personality and in the social aspect, physical neglect, anger expression, low positive emotion, and anxiety can explain psychopath very well. Reviewing in a little more detail, in case of borderline personality, self-injury is about the middle level while depression level is high. And in case of severe emotion expression suppression, borderline personality score is the highest and the next, the more self-injury is high, borderline personality score is increased. This kind of result implies because associations of negative emotional experience, maladaptive emotion regulation strategy, and impulsive behavior have increase borderline personality score to the highest emotional control defect of the existing borderline personality disorder can provide important impacts on the adaptation of misdeed juvenile with tendency of borderline personality. In addition, in case when self-injury score is low, depression level is low, and emotion regulation strategy with emotion avoidance thinking is used, borderline personality score is the lowest. In case of mental disease personality, however, the mental disease personality score is the highest when emotion control belief related to emotion control is high and when self-concept is negative from the aspect of personality. And control belief regarding emotion control is a middle level but psychopath score is the lowest when anger experience is small and positive emotion experience is a lot. This kind of the result implies the prevention and the treatment intervention for misdeed juvenile are required according to personality characteristics, because the variables able to explain the two personality characteristics of borderline personality and psychopath are different even though they are juvenile showing the same misdeed actions.
In the Study 2, a model regarding emotion dysregulation and impulsive behavior are composed by adding relevant factors based on the results of the existing researches even though they are not verified as the factors deciding borderline personality in the Study 1. The variables related to negative self-concept, negative emotion experience, emotion intensity, emotion regulation strategy, and impulsive behavior are included in this. First of all an emotion control model is composed and verified after verifying relationships between each variables with the objects of the 198 younger people classified as misdeed juvenile with a tendency of borderline personality. Next, this model is tested and verified with the 175 general juvenile with a tendency of borderline personality. As a result, the negative self-concept is a variable controlling both the negative emotion experience and the intensity of emotion. In addition, the emotion intensity makes emotion one has experienced more strong and affected using inefficient emotion regulation strategy. In this course, the mediation role of negative self-concept is confirmed, because emotion intensity mediates the use of negative emotion experience and inefficient emotion regulation strategy when negative self-concept is high but medium effect of emotion intensity does not appear when self-concept is not negative. Next, double mediation model, in which use of emotion strength and inefficient emotion regulation strategy mediated negative emotion experience and impulsive behavior, is confirmed. Finally, as a result of applying emotion dysreguation model of the misdeed juvenile with borderline personality to general juvenile, the same structure is confirmed. In case of general juvenile with borderline personality disorder feature, however, unlike misdeed juvenile, negative self-concept is confirmed as a variable affecting use of inefficient emotion regulation strategy, the general juveniles can relieve direct and powerful emotion reaction and can exercise restraint right before impulsive action while they respond efficiently with inhibition. This study implies that we need earlier intervention for prevention since emotion dysregulation of people with adult borderline personality feature is also confirmed among juveniles.
