This study aims to investigates what kind of tendency is shown in naturally occurring mentoring which takes place naturally in children’s daily life whether there can be significant correlation between network and function of naturally occurring mentoring and whether network and function of naturally occurring mentoring shows significant correlation with ego development and career maturity level.
The objects of analysis in this study were 8 areas in 5 cities: Seoul, Incheon, Suwon, Seongnam and Cheonan, and 973 students in 12 schools: middle school, high school and university. As the tools for this study the network index, mentoring function index, ego development index and career maturity level index were used after partly modified to fit for the purpose of this study. The collected data was treated by the program SPSS 12.0 for Windows; and the analysis on the significant difference depending on environmental variable network and function of naturally occurring mentoring was made by t verification, F verification and Scheff verification. The canonical correlations analysis after simple correlations analysis was made to find out whether any significant relation exists between network and function of naturally occurring mentoring the canonical correlations analysis after simple correlations analysis was made to find out whether naturally occurring mentoring shows significant correlation with ego development and career maturity level. The network range was analyzed by Blau Index.
The conclusion out of this study is as follows;
First, network range varies according to sex and grade; network range of boy student is larger than that of girl student, network range of middle school student is larger than that of high school or university student, the strength of network of girl student is stronger than that of boy student, and mentoring function of girl student is higher than that of boy student. When the investigation is made for grade, emotional support function and role model suggestion function shows higher level by university student than middle or high school student; for instrumental support function, university student is highest followed by middle school student and high school student.
Second, the stronger the strength of naturally occurring mentoring, the higher the support function for mentee to have its identity through mutual confidence and intimacy of mentor and mentee. For all middle school, high school and university students, the strength of naturally occurring mentoring could predict the function of naturally occurring mentoring, especially the emotional support function.
Third, the emotional support and the instrumental support function seem to predict well the sense of mistrust, diligence and basic trust the emotional support and its range and strength seem to predict well the sense of initiative, inferiority and mistrust; and role model suggestion and its strength seem to predict well the sense of guilt, shame, suspicion and mistrust. For middle school student, the stronger the role model suggestion function, the less the sense of distrust; for high school student, the wider the mentoring range, the higher the level of sense of shame and distrust. On the other hand, for university student, there hardly showed the correlation between network and function of naturally occurring mentoring and ego development.
Forth, it showed that the higher the instrumental suggestion function, emotional support function and role model suggestion function of naturally occurring mentoring, the higher the sense of confidence; the higher the emotional support function, the higher the sense of independence. For middle school student, the wider the size and range of mentoring, the higher the sense of determinacy. For high school student, the higher the instrumental support function, the higher the sense of confidence; and, the more the size of mentoring and emotional support function, the higher the sense of independence. On the other hand, for university student, there hardly showed the correlation between network and function of naturally occurring mentoring and career maturity level.
Recently as the interest on mentoring is increasing, the studies on mentoring are being conducted actively in every social area to strengthen the individual and organization competence. But it can cause negative result in its effectiveness because most of mentoring is not voluntary but official mentoring with a focus to short-term achievement for career target according to the necessity of the organization. Therefore, this study aims to find out the importance of naturally occurring mentoring which affects individual development for relatively long-term period with mutual deep connectedness and spontaneity, rather than official and intended mentoring oriented to conventional program of one to one connection. Through the result of this study, it intends to be helpful for the students, who are in jeopardy and difficulty due to self-identity confusion, to find their own meaning and value by developing the potentials and strengthening the competence through naturally occurring mentoring, and to suggest future goal and direction.
