This research focused on fan video generation syndrome created by internet video culture based on changes of the age and media technological features. The fan video is considered as a new genre succeeding various fandom cultures such as fanzine, fanfic, and fan cafe, and understood as an object to be analyzed which informs the pattern of changing fandom culture. Accordingly, it was intended to understand fan video producing culture and focused on the producer's own experiences and contents of video for that. Especially, in order to enhance understand for the fan video producers, it depended on interview, questionnaire, and self-questionnaire.
[Study issue 1] was set to attempt to understand production of fan video as a kind of fandom culture. From this, it was found that the fans used familiar portal sites as main publishing sites of their fan videos although several UCC specialized sites appeared. It was suggested that the main reason was that the portal sites provided video programs and prepared spaces for their storage and sharing and that the production and publication of fan video was not a kind of simple fandom activities, but was a medium for communication activity and played a role to activate interchanges among the fans.
hrough [Study issue 2], we investigated the reasons and purposes that they produced fan video of Dong Bang Shin Ki and found below 4 reasons. First, they could participate in fandom culture by producing the fan video. Second, they produced the fan video by their interests and active features. Third, the fan video production had functions such as meeting of their cultural demands, release of their stresses, and rest. Finally, when an already produced fan video obtained positive appraisal, it would act as a motive for producing next work. In addition, [Study issue 3] was set to understand a trend of fan video culture and from this, patterns and features of the fan video contents were investigated. As a result, it was found that the fan video had various patterns such as reprocessing of existing image contents, edited image of performances and concerts, and visualization of fanfic. Besides, it was suggested that as it used the couple name as like fanfic, the fanfic and the fan video did not exist independently, but they acted as mutual cultures. [Study issue 4] was set to approach to discussion on if the fan's production activities was creative and focused on what can be found through deep interview for the producers. From these, it was concluded that culture property of the fan video producer was creative in terms of positive view, which was based on Levy's insist that 'contents production allowing production of various texts and open interpretation of their meaning can be considered to be creative'. The fan video producers included their own tastes and senses using existing contents and attempted to interpret their various meaning. Additionally, they used the existing contents to produce new contents such as music drama and music video meeting with their own tastes voluntarily. And, they approached more systematically via consideration on what contents and meanings would be included production in process of their production. They found and maintained the common points in the above process to form a fandom.
The study was significant because it was found that the fan video visualized imaginations for stars, could produce the stars' cultural contents which had been embossed in terms of consumption, and could close a gap between a star and his/her fans through their realization. Moreover, this study put its meaning on assisting to recognize and understand the new fandom activity as a cultural practice area by identifying the pattern, production motives, and reasons of fan video. It was identified that the fan video was a result from active users, popularization of internet, and progression in production technology of digital image contents and could be concluded to be the fan's interest for their star and participation in fandom activities using media of multimedia generation.
