This study analyzed visual media such as exhibition and museum including Joseon Art Exhibition under occupation period of Japanese imperialism, starting from one question “How was the cultural subject formed under colony discipline authorities?”
As dominant structure of Japanese rule was processed with colonial condition, the perspective of visual subject was possibly to be ‘other-directed’ rather than ‘self-regulating’ mostly. This was because that visual experience of the subject was connected to Japanese imperialism added ‘Emperor’s factor’ rather than self-conscious reflection. Therefore, this study intended to facilitate another methodology in seeing visual perspective under occupation period of Japanese imperialism by applying ‘critical mind to vigil authority’ suggested by Foucault(Michel Foucault, 1926~1984) to cultural rule of Japanese imperialism.
First of all, researcher watched ‘Joseon Mulsan Fair’(1915) and’ Josean Exhibition’(1929) initiated by the Joseon Old Governor as symbolizing conversion of former visual structure, along with ‘Lee Dynasty Museum’ and ‘Joseon Old Governor Museum’ which fixed disciplinary perspective. The structure of exhibition and museum was a ‘political event’ which delivered colony discipline most effectively as a ‘huge exhibition’ basically, and took an effective role of internalizing ‘modernity of colony’ of Japan to Joseon peoples in that it was based on seeing of audience. This was an act of regarding colony as ‘laboratory of Japanese orientalism’ and a means of cultural rule along with slogan ‘unification of Japan and Joseon.’ In this context, Joseon Art Exhibition which applied eyes of ‘discrimination and elimination’ was a representing visual media that made the public interest stick to the exhibition by splendid play of journal, because it was a long term exhibition done over the 23 times.
The exhibition which reflected characteristic of culture politics was making ‘exhibition form’ matching with government-running contest year by year.
An interest regarding Oriental painting was transformed from pictures and writings represented with calligraphy and an oriental painting of plum-blossom, orchid, chrysanthemums and bamboo to colored picture with most-slender brush, and paintings of birds and animals, fair lady were increasing gradually through exhibition. Works which imitated creation attitude of the Japanese painting circles, along with popularity of colored picture prevailed in Joseon Art Exhibition through logic of ‘comparison/contrast.’ Also, Japanese examiner recommended 'local collar' particular in the colony which emphasized impoverished realistic of Joseon and lyricism of the folk. Joseon painters under Japanese rule developed their abilities to get social acknowledgement within the systems and cased results of placing the colony characteristic before modernity in reality of occupation period of Japanese imperialism.
The conversion toward wartime system occurred by the Sino-Japanese war in 1937 made Japanese academism worse further in the Joseon Art Exhibition, and folk image, recurrence of daily life far from nationality and the new woman filling vacancy of war were utilized as favorite materials to induce indifference toward colonial reality in late 1930s. That is, Japan inspired intention of joseon people who went to the war and purchased policy of ‘being subjects of the Japan Emperor’ with ideology of unification between Japanese and Joseon people by creating universal taste putting together inside and outside place.
Painters of middle standing who was grown through Joseon Art Exhibition emphasized academic canvas composed with ‘imitation and following’ and fixed folk lyricism and picture of fair lady to painting circles of Joseon. The contemporary cultural subjects did not only disclose colony phenomenon but also criticize it and even caused the results of not seeing realistic matter in hand.
As a result, the National Art Exhibition established in 1949 succeeded in Joseon Art Exhibition in respect of personal configuration and institutional one, the discipline authority of colony was maintained without losing its status. Though cultural subjects spread their voice through an exhibition and media from colony Joseon to the establishment of Korea government, but the visual symbol there was that of a discipline authority which ruled and controlled them rather than subject’s one. Visual subjects had to face difficult situation regardless of efforts to overcome contradiction of the system, because they were placed in hard position surrounding social, historical backgrounds in which they could not show their pure creation.
Colony experience like this stopped ‘intellectual activity’ and made results of driving the subjects to artificial community. However, human demand regarding change has various colors, and craves for the horizon of variety exceeding the visible world constantly. To erect right identity after breaking down the forced structure and create new thing in the open horizons will be an assignment to us over the century.
