Samabangmok(司馬榜目) is a list of successful candidates tested in Saengwon-si(生員試) or Jinsa-si(進士試). It comprises the information of passers who took the national exam held irregularly or in every three years. Samabangmok is more in detail than other list books when it comes to recording the information of passers. It is therefore outstanding in a sense that the book makes it possible to examine the change of influential families in each area by analyzing the passers.
Based on ≪CD-ROM Samabangmok≫ of 1997 provided by the Academy of Korean Studies and a Samabangmok database of current website, this paper analyzes the Samabangmok of Cheongju-mok(淸州牧) in Joseon Dynasty, including the time when Cheongju was degraded down to Seowon-hyun(西原縣) as well.
In this sense, the 433 of Sama-si passers resident in Cheongju are examined by comparing and analyzing the two kinds of Samabangmoks. Up to now, Samabangmok has been partly cited in papers on Hyangchon(鄕村) social history. Beyond that, however, samabangmok is more centered in this paper, which is focused on understanding Sama-si passers resident in cheongju throughout Joseon Dynasty by analyzing the result of statistics of list books. Furthermore, this result will be examined how correlated with specific families that produced considerable Sama-si passers in Cheongju. Also, The main purpose of this study is to analyze the type of families and to find the existence of main distinguished famailies in Cheongju region.
According to Samabangmok Analysis of Sama-si passers in Cheongju, the passers resident in Cheongju outnumbered others in Sukjong(肅宗) era and Kojong(高宗) era. This is because a long period of Dynasties usually held more exams and thereby produced more passers, including ones with special benefits. However, From geographical specialty of view, Cheongju Sarim(士林) and Sajok(士族) participated in many social activities resulted in increasing Seowon(書院) and growing Sama-si passers in Sukjong era. These passers were averagely 36.9 years old, which was older than the average age of 35.54 of national Sama-si passers. In addition, the oldest and the youngest passers in Kojong era received various benefits, and Yuhak(幼學) was 99% among the passers regionally as well as nationally.
In Munkwa(文科) the civil service examination, 54 of 433 Sama-si passers were admitted and the top three of highest scores among them were examined. According to the distribution of family names, Jeonju Lee(全州李) was most, Koryung Shin(高靈申) was second most and Namyang Hong(南陽洪) was followed next. Generally, 93 family names were found among total 1442 family names, and most of them were centralized in major family names. Court ranks of their fathers were mostly Munsan-kye(文散階) and usually in high ranks. The fathers' government offices were mostly Haksaeng(學生) and Yuhak and if they have jobs, they were usually Oegwan-jik(外官職), government position.
In regards of major distinguished families, the first ancestor of them and the year of his arriving and reason of migration were also explained. Not only that, Koryung Shin, Hansan Lee(韓山李) and Chogye Byun(草溪卞) were selected and analyzed with a world map in relation to Shinhang lecture hall in cheongju. These families settled in Cheongju in the middle era of Joseon Dynasty and continued their family strength as Sajok. Koryung Shin family was Namin(南人), filled with disiples of Hwang Lee(李滉) but was gradually pushed out of Shinhnag(莘港) Seowon. Hansan Lee family was Seoin(西人) and one of the most influential families that produced four principals in Shinhang Seowon. Beside, Eunjin Song(恩津宋) family continued to hold power by marrying Sajok in Cheongju. Chogye Byun family produced a few Sama-si passers nationally but generated half of passers in Cheongju. This means that Chogye Byun family enlarged their family after settling in Cheongju leaving their original place and was also influenced by Deukyun Lee(李得胤) and Siyeol Song(宋時烈) as a Seoin family.
Consequentially, the distinguished families that produced many Sama-si passers were resident in Cheongju and increased their family power in Hyangchon society through Shinhang Seowon and other Seowon. Moreover, their positions in Seowon and the clans in Cheongju were changed, influenced by the central government, according to a trend at that time.
