아르누보적 경향의 현대회화 연구 = (A) study of Art Nouveau Tendency in Modern Paintings

During the late 19th century and the early 20th century, notable events have occurred in visual art, and Art Nouveau got on the track of unrestricted formative art which pursues new value and ideas.
Although it was the short period of 1890∼1910, Art Nouveau was one of the artistic movements expressed the ethos of its time. Originally, Art Nouveau was to pursue the decoration style suitable for new time, but to many people in the world, it was occasionally re-defined with the decoration styles of Gothic, Baroque, Rococo and so on. Art Nouveau didn't just end with surface decoration, but combined with deep mysticism or symbolism, and it attracted many people.
Because most of the effects of Art Nouveau on the pure art area are insignificant and vague, it is difficult to give it a certain definition, But most of main elements of Art Nouveau (Simple shape, plane space, vital and curving lines and tendency of symbolism) somehow were predicted on the canvases before being adopted to the applied art. In this time, painters expressed their drawings in various ways by choosing motives of geometrical form, containing active and decorative lines which are typical characteristic of Art Nouveau, and combining them with constructionism and realism.
Art Nouveau discovered a typical order in natural life energy, and refused straight lines. On the contrary, it pursued the growth, which is the visual symbol of life force, curves and particularly admiring beauty of femininity. Especially female figures of Art Nouveau are remarkably described as 'the totality' in which virtue and vice coexist.
Important composition of picture of Atr Nouveau was the general stylization of lines, surfaces, colors and motives. It ignored traditional laws of perspective but used plane totality. A color had emotional meaning in Art Nouveau. The first examples of adjusting the surface without content of the drawing subject but only with forms and colors were what the Art Nouveau painters did.
Even now, with attractive and decorative motives, rich structure, and patterns and symbols, Art Nouveau fascinates us in various genres and various way.
