The rate of compulsive behaviors of children with autism is higher than that of common children. As the children with autism suffer from some trouble in their lives because of problem behaviors, compulsive behaviors can cause serious stresses and social inadaptability to those children. However, behavior correction or consultation for the problems hard to diagnose are not being performed to them.
In such circumstances, the study of compulsive behaviors of children with autism is required. Therefore, in this study, I am going to check whether social story intervention composed of affirmative sentences is effective for decrease of compulsive behaviors, and whether even after completion of the intervention the effect thereof can be maintained and generalized.
For this study, a subject child was chosen in order to check the effect of social story intervention for the decrease of compulsive behaviors of the children with autism, and multiple- probe-across-behaviors design was applied in order to verify the effect of intervention for three compulsive behaviors such as confirmative behavior, excessive washing hands, arrangement of that child.
All intervention, observation and maintenance were practiced in the after-school-class. The intervention was practiced for 20 minutes, the observation was practiced for 3 hours, and the frequency of compulsive behaviors of the subject child was measured and evaluated. And the above operations are also practiced at home in order to verify the effect of generalization.
The result of this study is as follows.
First, as the result of the social story intervention, the compulsive behaviors of the child with autism who joins this study decreased.
Second, as the result of the social story intervention, the effect on the compulsive behaviors of the child with autism was maintained even after finishing the intervention.
Third, as the result of the social story intervention, the effect on the compulsive behaviors of the child with autism was also generalized at other places.
Putting the results of the above study together, the social story intervention decreases the compulsive behaviors of the children with autism, and maintains/generalizes the effect on the compulsive behaviors. Though the compulsive behaviors of the subject child of this study were decreased, the compulsive behaviors were seen still a little. Thus, constant study about this subject is required.
