The purpose of this study is, by the method of meta-analysis, to integrate and analyze the data for the effects of art therapy program on ADHD children's essential feature. For this analysis, 114 of doctoral dissertations, master thesis, and articles were examined and finally 9 studies were selected for the meta-analysis. The selected studies were conducted from 1994 to October of 2008 in Korea and applied pre-post controlled group design studies.
The results of this study is summarized as follows:
First, the general trend of the theses collected shows that there have been used both single program(plastic activity, mandala, mutual scribble story, collage) or mixed programs. And there have been published form 2002.
Second, the total mean effect size of art therapy programs in this study turned out to be 2.89. The results show that art therapy programs on ADHD children's essential feature were very effective.
Third, the mean effect size on inattention of art therapy programs in this study was 2.58, the mean effect size on impulsivity that was 3.22, the mean effect size on hyperactivity that was 6.14.
Fourth, the mean effect size of the art therapy programs on ADHD children's essential feature classified by grade(elementary student), total session, session duration, intervention period(1 time a week or 2 time a week) is as follow: grade of 1-4 (2.40), 5-6 (4.86), total session of 8-12 (1.80), 18-22 (3.62), session duration of 40 minutes and less (3.81), 41-60 minutes (1.79), 61-90 minutes (4.86), intervention period of 1 time a week (1.39), 2 time a week (3.74).
