This study investigate the mediating effects of dysfunctional attitude and rumination as the cognitive variables on the process from stress response to depression and social anxiety. 494 undergraduate students (in a few universities located in Daegu and Gyungbuk province area) were participated, and they completed the Stress Response Inventory(SRI), Dysfunctional Attitude Scale(DAS), Ruminative Response Scale(RRS), Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), and Social Avoidance and Distress Scale(SADS).
The result showed that the mediating effects of dysfunctional attitude on relationship of depression or social anxiety, individually. So, negative emotions such as depression or social anxiety could be experienced much more due to their subjective perception & interpretation. Also the mediating effects of rumination on relationship of depression and social anxiety were validated. So, vulnerable individuals who have rumination thinking style could have severe depression or social anxiety. Finally, the mediating model of dysfunctional attitude and rumination simultaneously fit properly, but only the path of depression has been confirmed. These results showed the mediating effect of dysfunctional attitude and rumination in depression, but not in social anxiety.
The results of the cognitive approach to depression and social anxiety provide empirical support partially, and these results would be considerable in the treatment of depression and social anxiety.
