The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of physical activity and dietary habits on functional fitness, prevalence of chronic disease, and health-related quality of life(HRQOL) in older adults living in the urban area.
The subjects of this study were 474(male: 127, female: 347) older adults aged 65-85 participated in health and recreation class periodically in health and senior center located in seoul and kyeonggi-do. All subjects completed a questionnaire under researcher supervision. Level of physical activity was determined using the Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity (RAPA) questionnaire, level of dietary habits from dietary habits questionnaire, rate of chronic disease from medical history questionnaire, and health-related quality of life from short form 36 questionnaire(SF-36). The items of functional fitness were muscle strength(grip strength), muscle endurance(chair sit to stand, arm curl), flexibility(chair sit and reach, back scratch), balance(one leg balance with eyes open, 2.45m up and go), aerobic endurance(2-min walk).
In order to analyze collected data, chi-square test, factorial ANOVA, and pearson's correlation coefficient were used. The statistical significance was set at p<.05. The results of this study were as follows;
1. There was a significant difference in height variables by sex, age, and physical activity level(p<.05). Also, weight was identified significantly by sex and age. While, there was no significant difference in smoking rate, drinking rate, and dietary habits of older adults by physical activity level.
2. The percent of chronic disease of older adults living with one more disease was 92.4%. The rate of chronic disease was higher in hypertension(47.8%), arthritis(30.2%), gastric disease(29.8%), urinary disease(24.4%), and diabetes(19%) item. There was significant difference in the prevalence rate of chronic disease by physical activity level, but dietary habits did not have an effect on chronic disease.
3. There was significant difference in grip strength, standing with eyes open, chair sit to stand, arm curl, 2.45m up and go, and 2-min walk item by sex, age, and physical activity level(p<.05).
4. There was significant difference in the score of physical function domain of HRQOL by age, physical activity level. Also, there was significant difference in general health and vitality domain by physical activity level. The HRQOL scores in all domains except for mental health were significantly higher in the group reporting higher physical activity.
5. In the correlation about functional fitness and HRQOL variables, muscle endurance(chair sit to stand), dynamic balance(2.45m up and go), aerobic endurance(2-min walk) showed higher relationship(p<.05).
According to the above results, regular participation in physical activity is one of the most effective ways for older adults including those with chronic disease to promote independence from improvement of functional fitness and increase quality of life in old age.
