The objective of the present study was to examine the relation of fathers?f marital satisfaction and job satisfaction with their parenting efficacy. This study is meaningful in that it identifies what is most important in child rearing at home.
Research questions for this study are as follows.
First, how is fathers marital satisfaction and how different is it according to background variables?
Second, how is fathers job satisfaction and how different is it according to background variables?
Third, how is fathers parenting efficacy and how different is it according to background variables?
Fourth, what relation is there between fathers marital satisfaction and their parenting efficacy?
Fifth, what relation is there between fathers job satisfaction and their parenting efficacy?
The subjects of this study were fathers with children at the age of 2~6, and the survey was conducted during the period from the 7th of July to the 22nd of September in 2007. In the survey, questionnaires were distributed to fathers who visited one of 4 kindergartens and cultural centers at Gangnamgu, Seoul to attend a participant class with their children, and answered questionnaires were recovered on the spot.
Collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 11.5. The subjects general characteristics were examined through frequencies and percentages, and differences in the fathers marital satisfaction, job satisfaction and parenting efficacy were measured through test and one way ANOVA. In addition, correlation analysis was conducted in order to determine the correlations of the fathers marital satisfaction and job satisfaction with their parenting efficacy.
The results of analyzing the research questions are summarized as follows.
First, as to the fathers marital satisfaction according to their general characteristics, marital satisfaction was not significantly different according to age. In addition, fathers marital satisfaction was found relatively high in general.
Second, as to fathers job satisfaction, their job satisfaction appeared slightly higher than the average. By occupation, job satisfaction was highest in those with occupations categorized into Others such as entertainers, and office workers showed lower job satisfaction than other types of workers. In addition, job satisfaction was significantly different according to occupation.
Third, as to fathers parenting efficacy, their parenting efficacy appeared average. It also showed significant difference according to age.
Fourth, as to the relation between fathers marital satisfaction and their parenting efficacy, marital satisfaction showed a statistically significant positive correlation with parenting efficacy. This suggests that fathers parenting efficacy is higher when their marital satisfaction is high.
Fifth, as to the relation between fathers job satisfaction and their parenting efficacy, job satisfaction showed a statistically significant positive correlation with parenting efficacy. This suggests that fathers parenting efficacy is higher when their job satisfaction is high.
