본 연구에서는 최근의 유통시장이 치열한 경쟁체제가 형성됨에 따라 차별화된 경쟁력을 강화하고 안정적인 성장과 수익률을 지속할 수 있는 수단 중의 하나인 소매점 자산에 대하여 연구를 진행하였다. 그 동안 유통경로가 가지고 있는 자산의 중요성에도 불구하고 유통시장에서 자산에 대한 연구가 많이 이루어지지 않고 있었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 브랜드 자산(brand equity)에 대한 이론과 이러한 개념을 바탕으로 연구된 소매점 자산(retailer equity)의 측정도구를 활용하여 대표적인 유통경로라 할 수 있는 백화점, 할인점, 편의점, TV홈쇼핑, 온라인(On-Line) 쇼핑에 대한 소매점 자산을 실증적으로 검증하였다. 이를 위해 이론적 배경을 기반으로 소매점 자산을 형성하는 선행요인을 ‘물리적 요인, 인적 서비스 요인, 제품 요인, 정책 요인, 지각된 이미지, 거래의 확신성’의 6가지로 재구성하였다. 또한 이러한 선행요인들이 관계혜택과 충성도에 미치는 영향과 관계혜택과 충성도가 소매점 자산에 미치는 영향에 대하여 알아보았다. 소매점 자산을 형성하는 선행요인과 관계혜택, 충성도, 그리고 소매점 자산 간의 형성과정에 대해 규명하는 것은 고객이 유통경로를 선택하고 이용하는 근본적인 이유를 확인하는데 도움이 될 것이기 때문이다. 이 연구에서의 소매점 자산은 고객이 해당 유통경로에 대한 단순한 몰입이 아닌 심리적인 결속을 느끼는 정도의 내용을 포함하는 개념을 의미한다.
본 연구를 위해 백화점, 할인점, 편의점, TV홈쇼핑, 온라인 쇼핑의 유통경로를 모두 포괄할 수 있는 연구모형을 설정하였다. 또한 소매점 자산을 형성하는 선행요인이 관계혜택과 충성도에 미치는 영향, 그리고 관계혜택과 충성도가 소매점 자산에 미치는 영향에 대해 4개의 가설과 그에 따른 하위가설을 도출하였다. 실증분석을 위해 최근 3개월 이내에 해당 유통경로를 반복적이고 지속적으로 이용해 본 경험이 있는 고객들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며, SPSS 12.0을 활용하여 신뢰성과 타당성을 검증하였다. 또한 AMOS 7.0을 활용하여 전반적인 모형에 대해 검증을 실시하였다. 요인분석 결과 다른 경로에서는 모두 하나의 연구단위별로 요인이 도출되었으나, 할인점에서 소매점 자산이 본원적 자산과 사회적 자산으로 분리되었으며, 온라인 쇼핑의 제품 요인에서 제품 가격과 제품 설명에 대한 요인으로 나누어지는 결과를 나타내고 있다.
실증분석 결과, 각 유통경로에 따라 소매점 자산을 형성하는 요인과 관계혜택, 충성도, 소매점 자산 간의 관계가 다르게 나타났으며, 좀 더 구체적으로 살펴보면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 소매점 자산을 형성하는 선행요인이 관계혜택에 유의한 영향을 미칠 것이라는 가설 1에서 백화점은 인적 서비스 요인, 정책 요인, 지각된 이미지, 거래의 확신성이 관계혜택에 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었으나 이 중 정책 요인과 거래의 확신성은 부정적인(-)영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 할인점은 인적 서비스 요인, 제품 요인, 거래의 확신성에서 유의한 결과를 나타내고 있으며, 거래의 확신성은 부정적으로(-) 영향을 미치는 결과를 보여주고 있다. 편의점은 제품 요인을 제외한 모든 요인들이 유의한 영향을 미치는데, 물리적 요인, 정책 요인, 거래의 확신성에서 부정적인(-) 영향을 미친다는 결과를 나타내고 있다. TV홈쇼핑은 물리적 요인과 인적 서비스 요인에서만 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으나, 인적 서비스 요인은 관계혜택에 부정적인(-) 영향을 미친다는 결과가 도출되었다. 마지막으로 온라인 쇼핑에서는 물리적 요인, 인적 서비스 요인, 제품 가격 요인, 지각된 이미지가 관계혜택에 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었는데, 이 중 인적 서비스 요인과 제품 가격 요인은 부정적인(-) 영향을 미치는 결과를 보여주고 있다.
둘째, 소매점 자산을 형성하는 선행요인이 충성도에 유의한 영향을 미칠 것이라는 가설 2에서 백화점은 정책 요인, 지각된 이미지, 거래의 확신성에서 유의한 결과를 보여주고 있는데, 이 중 지각된 이미지를 제외한 다른 요인들은 모두 부정적인(-) 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 할인점의 경우에는 지각된 이미지만이 충성도에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 분석되었으며, 거래의 확신성에서는 부정적인(-) 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 편의점의 경우에는 물리적 요인, 정책 요인, 지각된 이미지의 3가지 요인이 충성도에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 도출되었는데, 이 중 물리적 요인과 정책 요인은 부정적으로(-) 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. TV홈쇼핑은 가설 1과 마찬가지로 물리적 요인과 인적 서비스 요인에서만 유의한 결과를 보여주고 있으며, 이에서도 역시 인적 서비스 요인은 부정적인(-) 영향을 미치는 결과를 도출하고 있다. 온라인 쇼핑에서는 물리적 요인, 인적 서비스 요인, 제품 설명 요인, 지각된 이미지가 충성도에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 인적 서비스 요인과 제품 설명 요인은 부정적인(-) 영향을 미치는 결과를 보여주고 있다.
셋째, 관계혜택이 소매점 자산에 유의한 영향을 미칠 것이라는 가설 3과 충성도가 소매점 자산에 유의한 영향을 미칠 것이라는 가설 4는 모든 유통경로에서 유의한 결과를 나타내고 있다.
결론적으로 본 연구는 중요성에 비해 연구가 많이 이루어지지 않은 소매점 자산에 대해 실증적으로 연구를 진행하였다는데 그 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.
이를 위해 기존의 브랜드 자산에서 활용했던 개념을 유통경로에 도입하는 것이 아니라 유통경로의 특성에 맞는 소매점 자산의 선행변수들을 도출하였으며, 또한 이러한 선행변수들과 고객들의 내?외적으로 형성될 수 있는 무형적 요인들인 관계혜택과 충성도, 그리고 소매점 자산 간의 관계에 대해 통합적인 모형을 사용하여 다양한 경로를 비교?분석하였다.
본 연구결과를 통해 유통경로별 소매점 자산을 형성하기 위한 선행요인들을 확인하고 평가하는 기준이 될 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 이는 유통경로를 보유하고 있는 기업뿐만 아니라 유통경로에 제품을 공급하는 공급업자 또는 판매자의 입장에서도 유통경로별 제품판매 전략을 수립하는데 있어서 좀 더 폭넓게 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
