The thesis intends to suggest potential ways to utilize Tango as resources for creation in cultural contents. Tango in diverse aspects such as dance, songs or music can be highly valued as cultural property. Additionally, Tango contains greater prospective to be recognized in the international market. Accordingly, Tango is considered to be appropriate resources in the cultural contents industry that is rising as a trendy paradigm in this knowledge based society.
This article focuses on dance amongst Tango’s various perspectives as cultural contents. Dance is again regarded as the most apt ground in modern times which also represents the media era. The thesis studies two movies called <Tango> and <Tango Lesson> that introduces Tango as the major source.
Nevertheless, these two movies were not so successful in terms of the box office profits. On the other hand, a musical performance on Tango that showed in a similar time in Korea made a hit and high profits accordingly. It is believed that the major contribution to the difference in success is the delivery medium albeit the analogous resource and plot. This study tries to analyze the two movies with the assumption that the critical keys to success in a movie, initiating Tango as the major source is to maximize the unique characteristics of its resource and applications. Furthermore, the article makes suggestions on effective ways to use resources in the view of cultural contents.
Tango as creative source in movies can be largely divided into resources in general and resources as a figure.
Resources in general take into account a number of aspects such as the structure of the plot, relations of the characters and narratives. On the other hand, resources as a figure are required to emphasize the symbolic meaning which is in collusion with the history of Tango.
Those two movies studied in the thesis are both deeply attached to Tango. In other words, the both movies did not include any other figures other than Tango itself. The movie <Tango> is a story about making a film on Tango and <Tango Lesson> is about a filmmaker learning Tango. There are extraordinary images in the movies, however, they still lack to impress the audience.
The foremost reason for the limitation of dance in the movies is that expressions of the dance are restricted. In other words, the audience cannot feel the movement and the dance is not lively. Secondly, the audience is not given any choice to choosethe scenes as the images are intentionally made in the films. Thirdly, the movies are required to meet the expectations of the audience. For instance, what is expected from dance from an ordinary club is different from that of professional dancers in the competition.
As to apply Tango as creative resources, initially inspired imagination that can be expressed from Tango can be considered. Creation of great work demands wild imagination from a new perspective on diverse symbolic languages of Tango. Further suggestions are made on production of varied images and database of Tango.
As pointed out earlier, most movies on Tango until now are heavily dependant upon the dance itself, which can be risky in terms of popularity or success of the movie. It is important to blend resources as a figure within the resources in general for the production of work. The basic notion for work should be derived from the creative thoughts on the symbolic significance of Tango. This process enables to produce work that gains a higher recognition from the audience.
