Sexual change occurs, and also sexual identity is formed at the period of university from adolescent period to adulthood, and the establishment of upright identity and sexual ethics acts as a major factor to form self identity or be grown up. Also the period of university can be regarded as an important period that can transfer sexual knowledge into behavior, firm up own identity through free relationships, and preparing adulthood. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence that university students sexual knowledge has on sexual attitude, and clarify the relation between sexual behavior and sexual attitude by dividing it into two factors. The concrete research problems are as follows.
First, this study examines the sexual attitude of Korean university students. Second, it examines the sexual behavior of Korean university students. Third, it examines the sexual attitude and behavior according to the demographical characteristic. This study is expected to recognize the importance of factor which forms healthy sexual values and behavior by making a close inquiry of the relation between factors, and examining the influence that university students' sexual attitude has on sexual attitude, and clarifies the educational suggestion for the development of sexual education and sexual culture at university. Also the date from this study can be used to develop the sexual education program for the youth and university students.
In this study, survey was conducted on October, 2008, and subjects were students who were at university and graduate school in Seoul and Gyunggi-Do. Total 300 questionnaires were used for the final analysis. Frequency Analysis, Factor Analysis, Reliability Analysis, χ² test, t-test, ANOVA, Dunacan Test for post-hoc analysis, and Regression Analysis were used to analyze with using SPSS for Window 15.0 Program.
The results summarized according to research subject matter are as follows.
First, as examined the difference between the level of sexual knowledge and the sexual attitude of university students, they had open attitude toward 'acceptability of sex’ and ‘acceptability of prostitution’ as they had higher level of sexual knowledge. There was significant difference in most of sexual attitude, except homosexual love and abortion, and it can be analogized that possibly the level of sexual knowledge becomes increased through the process of obtaining the knowledge of sexual problem that can occur in substantial sexual relation because the university is the period that can freely express the sex, and can experience various knowledge from sexual experience and various media.
Second, as examined the influence that sexual attitude of university students has on sexual behavior, the group having sexual experience had open sexual attitude toward ‘acceptability of sex’, ‘acceptability of sexual relation before marriage’, ‘acceptability of abortion’, and ‘acceptability of prostitution’ more than the group having no sexual experience. So university students accept sexual relation before marriage more as they have more acceptability of sexual relation, and thus they are acceptable toward the abortion.
Third, there was significant difference in 3 factors of sexual behavior according to sexual attitude, and they were in order of ‘acceptability of prostitution’, ‘acceptability of homosexual love’, and ‘acceptability of sexual relation before marriage'. Physical sexual violent behavior was increased as ‘acceptability of homosexual love’ was open, and it was increased as participants had open propensity toward ‘acceptability’, and ‘acceptability of sexual relation before marriage’. Linguistic sexual violent behavior was influenced by factors in order of ‘acceptability of prostitution’, ‘acceptability of homosexual love’, and ‘outlook on free marriage’, and for homosexual love, linguistic sexual violent behavior was increased as the acceptability was closed as well as physical sexual violent behavior. Linguistic sexual violent behavior was increased as ‘acceptability of prostitution’ and ‘outlook on free marriage’ was open. Mental sexual violent behavior was increased as participants were open to ‘acceptability of prostitution’.
Fourth, as examined university students' sexual attitude and behavior according to age, there was significant difference in ‘acceptability of sexual relation’, ‘acceptability of sexual relation before marriage’, and ‘outlook on free marriage’, ‘acceptability of sexual relation’ and ‘acceptability of sexual relation before marriage’ was open as they were older, and ‘outlook on free marriage’ was open as they were younger. For the difference between groups according to age, there were the most sexual experiences in ‘25-28 years old’ for man, ‘21-24years old’ for woman respectively, and as compared this result by considering the period of man's military service, it can be analogized that both man and woman student have the most sexual experience at 2nd and 3rd year of university.
Fifth, as examined university students' sexual attitude and behavior according to gender, man was open to ‘acceptability of sexual relation’ and ‘acceptability of prostitution’, and had conservative propensity for ‘acceptability of homosexual love’ more than woman. Also for ‘outlook on free marriage’, woman had open propensity more than man. As examined the sexual behavior according to gender, man had more sexual experiences than woman, and man had more acceptable behavior toward physical, linguistic, and mental sexual violent behavior than woman. On the basis of these results, it can be analogized that traditional socialization, which woman is passive, and must accept the demands of man, is one of factors that increases the sexual violent behavior and damage.
As these results of this study, it is considered that it is necessary to develop sexual educational program appropriate for the open sexual culture of university students, and it is important to develop it for teenagers because the age of having sexual experience becomes younger.
Also for the development of healthy sexual culture, it is urgent to revitalize and develop gender equity education, sexual education program at university, and a consultation office or social device where can consult sexual problems such as sexual harassment, sexual violence, and so on to make university students form upright sexual values in the period that can transfer sexual values into sexual behavior.
