The paper aims at shedding light on the relationship between dance art and woman by applying feminism, which is one of varying research methods for dance art, and investigating the property of feminism that shows in Korean creative dances, centering on 「柳Ryu-Tree of Vitality 」choreographed by Kang Mi-ri, 「A Lady Embraced a Moon」choreographed by Lee Eun-ju 「梅窓 Maechang- Plum Blossom on the Window」choreographed by Kim hyun-ja and 「Full Moon」choreographed by Kim Mae-ja.
Korean creative dance from the end of the 20th century to the 21st century keeps pace with rapid social·cultural changes, presenting characteristics such as the revitalization of international exchanges in accordance with globalization and internationalization, transgression of genres in which modern dance and each genre’s property are integrated, and a tendency that concentrates on inquiry into individual identity to achieve the universality and specialty of the time based on individual uniqueness.
In such a reality, Korean creative dance has been continuously creating dance works, reflecting the recognition of feminism, which is one of the viewpoints to see social·cultural phenomenon. Feminism can be shortly defined as women’s liberation movement. As feminism is one of cultural movements that transcends political·social movements, it raises an objection to problems in social system and human life and to male-dominated ideology, disclosing their unjustness. In addition, it is a movement to seek the lost identity of women who were dealt with as an adjunct of men for a long time and to recover the distorted femininity by deviating from the fixed idea of society against women. Following the flow of the times, feminism has developed absorbing various ideological characteristics such as liberalism, Marxism, socialism, radicalism, psychoanalytic feminism, post-modern feminism, and so on.
As feminist criticism for the male-dominated social background has grown naturally and slowly in accordance with the change of the times, feminist dancers have started to appear. Female dancers or choreographers try to sublimate their special emotion and ideology with their unique expression though woman’s body, starting from the change of awareness that newly recognizes a woman who played only a passive role as the subject of dance.
The following are the properties of feminism showing feminist dances in Korean creative dance. First, the researched performances re-analyzed patriarchism for woman not from the masculine view but from the feminine view, projecting ‘a new position for self and subjectivity’ and ‘self-reflection’. Second, the main roles of the performances were led by women and women were social subjects there. Third, the emotions and ideologies backing women were expressed through the body of a woman and the performances suggested a direction toward community and communication. Fourth, the performances show equality by securing the dignity of a man and a woman through the proper and balanced choreography arrangement between male and female dances.
