Meaning in life has been regarded as an important variable in psychology to explain human’s well-being. But present studies were limited to finding out the positive effects caused by having meaning life. And searching for meaning was neglected even though searching for meaning in life does not always lead to finding it. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to develop a process of finding meaning in life. For that, searching for meaning and meaning presence were used conceptually independently in this study. Also mediator effects of ego-resilience and positive affect on the relation between searching for meaning and meaning presence as well as mediator effect of ego-resilience on the relation between positive affect and meaning presence were examined.
The participants in this study were285 undergraduate students at a university in Seoul, South Korea and SEM(Structure equation modeling) was used to test the research model and significance of mediator effects.
The results of the study are as follows:
First, the research model that assumed mediator effect of ego-resilience and positive affect on the relation between searching for meaning and meaning presence was supported. Each estimated value of path coefficient was significant except a path positive affect to meaning presence.
Second, there was mediator effect of ego-resilience on the relation between searching for meaning and meaning presence in life. The direct effect of searching for meaning on meaning presence and indirect effect of searching for meaning on meaning presence through ego-resilience were significant. These findings not only support a strong correlation between meaning in life and ego-resilience like present studies but also provide information that ego-resilience mediates between searching for meaning and meaning presence, which makes the relation of two variables more concrete. Also, the result that there is direct effect of searching for meaning on meaning presence is different from the one of the study in USA. The result makes it possible to have an explanation that Korean university students consider searching for meaning as a method of improving their mind. Therefore, they search for meaning in life all the time even though they already have it.
Third, there was no mediator effect of positive affect on the relation between searching for meaning and meaning presence in life. The result supports present studies that positive affect and meaning in life is not always related while it does not supports that positive affect enhance the feeling that life is meaningful. As many factors influence on meaning presence in life, there would be other mediators on the relation among two variables. Or the result reflects the culture difference between the west and the east. In west, expressing positive affect is general and it correlates highly with meaning in life. On the other hand, in the east, it is virtuous to keep to the golden mean between positive and negative effect. So, positive affect would not always predict meaning presence for Korean university students.
Fourth, there was mediator effect of ego-resilience on the relation between positive affect and meaning presence in life. The direct effect of positive affect on meaning presence was insignificant and indirect effect of positive affect on meaning presence through ego-resilience was significant. In other words, positive affect leads to meaning presence only when it is mediated by ego-resilience. The result supports the researches that ego-resilience control and use positive affect to adapt. The result also may cause that affect is unstable and how we manage the affects is more important than what we feel so that transform it to stable thing like meaning in life. Therefore, in order to make people use their daily positive affects as a source of information that life is meaningful, psychologists have to find out the characters and strengths of each individual and help develop those elements.
