The objective of this research is to prepare basic materials for improvement of productivity of nursing job by grasping the factors related to job performance of nurses in ICU and nurses in general ward through comparison of job as professionalism, job satisfaction, conflicts involving performance of duty, job stress and burn-out of nurses in ICU and nurses in general ward who work in a general hospital.
The researcher explained the contents and objective of this research to 192 nurses in ICU and 196 nurses in general ward working in 4 university hospitals located in Seoul and got their consent to prepare and report the questionnaire. The materials were collected from September 1 to 26, 2008.
As research tool, the measurer of job as professionalism, job satisfaction, conflicts involving performance of duty, job stress and burn-out was used. The collected materials were analyzed by SPSS Window 15.0 Program to check frequency, percentage, χ²_test and t-test according to the purpose of the research.
The results of this research are as follows;
1) Comparing the job as professionalism between nurses in ICU and general ward, those in ICU(M=3.44) showed significantly higher value(t=2.599, p=.010) than those in general ward nurse(M=3.33). Examining the job as professionalism for each lower area, nurses in ICU were statistically higher(t=2.660, p=.008) than those in general ward. In expertise of nursing, nurses in ICU were statistically higher than those in general ward (t=2.225, p=.027).
2) In the comparison of job satisfaction between nurses in ICU and general ward, nurses in ICU(M=3.38) were statistically higher(t=2.47, p=.014) than those in general ward nurse(M=3.26) in internal satisfaction.
3) In the comparison of conflicts involving performance of duty between nurses in ICU and general ward, nurses in ICU(M=3.15) showed higher average than those in general ward nurse(M=3.08), but there was no significant difference (t=.734, p=.313).
4) In the comparison of job stress between nurses in ICU and general ward, there was no significant difference between them.
5) In the comparison of burn-out between nurses in ICU and general ward, nurses in ICU(M=2.89) were significantly lower(t=-2.21, p=.028) than those in general ward (M=3.00). In comparing burn -out in the lower area, there was no significant difference in emotional burn-out and psychological deviation.
In the results, nurses in ICU were higher than those in general ward in job as professionalism, job satisfaction and conflicts involving performance of duty except burn-out and job stress
Based on the results, the researcher makes the following suggestion.
1) It is needed to examine the differences in more diverse variables for the nurses in each department in addition to the participants of this research.
