앤서니 브라운의 일러스트레이션에 내재된 조형요소와 상징성 분석 연구

The illustration of a picture book leads reader’s gaze, and delivers a theme at a look before text. These properties cause interest to a child who isn’t practiced letters and induce concentration and provide clue to understand the contents. And the process to read and understand pictures fosters the visual interpretation skills grasping the meaning. A picture book is the aggregate of illustration including visual symbols, formative element, symbolism and others which are the child’s first touch. Young readers of a picture book form and understand the basic foundation of community and culture through a picture book, and recognize the pleasure of visual art with forming positive self-concept. And a child fosters aesthetic sensibility having interest and impression through appreciation of picture before recognizing letters.
Each of formative elements such point, line, plane, solid, color, texture, light, time and space has visual power and is harmonized by mutually complementary action in a picture book. In order to read a picture book, the ability to read a picture as well as the ability to read a text is demanded and understanding about the writer is necessary. The writers of a picture book, illustrators, compose the story creating characters, events, background and others and include a subject with unique painting style and picture techniques including their own personality in the restricted canvas. An English writer of picture book, Anthony Browne is the representative writer beloved from children of worldwide and his books are best sellers in our country for long.
Anthony Browne is the writer drawing surreal world with realism style. His books are philosophical and hidden images of his books add enjoyment to read. Subject and contents of books link to social area such child’s self-identity, family relations, friends relations, social issues and others and hidden images of illustration link to the activity finding original form of literature and picture. His works which show both of the world recognized by human and unconscious of the world not recognized by human but existing are classified from others’ works. It is necessary to look close the characters of his works based on formative elements.
The picture of Anthony Browne harmonizes with, supplements and is compared with story, so includes in-depth story behind the plot. And his illustration include transformed well-known works of literatures, pictures and popular culture and delivers symbolic meaning. Therefore children read and understand and sympathize with his books, and find new meaning whenever they read repeatedly .
Accordingly I understood the basic theory and characters of formative elements such point, line, plane, solid, color, texture, light, time and space and studied picture books mainly utilized each of formative elements at this research. And I selected Anthony Browne’s picture books among various picture books, and analyzed and arranged harmony with picture and story, possibility of various construction and formative elements and symbolism in illustration in order to be a good picture book as an art through his books.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그림책의 일러스트레이션은 독자의 시선을 유도하며, 글보다 우선하여 한눈에 이야기의 주제를 전달한다. 이러한 특징은 문자에 익숙하지 않은 유아 및 아동의 흥미를 유발하고 집중을 유도하는 동시에 내용을 이해하는 실마리를 제공한다. 또한 그림을 읽고 이해하는 과정을 통해 의미를 파악하는 시각적 해석 능력을 길러준다. 그림책은 유아 및 아동이 처음 접하게 되는 시각 기호, 조형요소, 상징 등이 담긴 일러스트레이션의 집합체이다. 그림책의 어린 독자는 그림책을 통해서 사회ㆍ문화의 기본적인 토대를 형성하고 이해하며, 긍정적인 자아개념 형성과 함께 시각예술의 즐거움을 알게 된다. 또한 문자 인식에 앞서 그림에 대한 감상을 통해 흥미와 감동을 받으며 미적 감수성을 키우게 된다.
점, 선, 면, 입체, 색, 질감, 빛, 시간, 공간 등의 조형요소들은 하나하나가 개별적으로 시각적인 힘을 가지고 있으며 상호보완적인 작용으로 그림책 안에서 조화를 이룬다.
그림책을 읽기 위해서는 글을 읽을 수 있는 능력뿐만 아니라 그림을 읽을 수 있는 능력이 동시에 요구되며 작가에 대한 이해도 필요하다. 그림책 작가들, 즉 일러스트레이터들은 저마다 개성이 담긴 독특한 그림체와 회화 기법을 가지고 제한된 화면 안에서 인물, 사건, 배경 등을 설정하여 이야기를 구성해내며, 주제를 담아낸다. 그 중 영국의 그림책 작가 앤서니 브라운(Anthony Edward Tudor Browne)은 전 세계적으로 아동들의 사랑을 받고 있는 대표적인 작가로, 국내에서도 그의 그림책들은 장기간 동안 서적 판매율이 높은 인기 상품으로 인정받고 있다.
앤서니 브라운은 사실주의 기법으로 초현실세계를 그리는 작가이다. 그의 그림책들은 철학적이며, 숨어있는 이미지들이 그림책을 읽는 재미를 더해준다. 작품의 주제와 내용은 아동의 자아정체성, 가족관계, 친구관계, 사회문제 등 사회영역과 연결되며, 일러스트레이션 안의 ‘숨겨진 이미지’들은 문학과 회화의 원형들을 찾는 활동으로 연결된다. 인간이 의식하고 있는 세계와 의식하지 못하지만 분명히 현존하는 무의식의 세계를 공존하여 보여주는 그의 작품은 다른 작가들의 그림들과 확실히 구분된다. 이러한 그의 작품의 특징들을 조형요소들을 기본으로 하여 자세하게 살펴볼 필요가 있다고 본다.
앤서니 브라운의 그림은 글의 내용과 일치ㆍ보충ㆍ대조됨으로써 줄거리 이면에 심층적인 이야기를 담고 있다. 또한 그의 일러스트레이션에는 잘 알려진 문학, 회화, 대중문화 영역의 작품들이 변형되어 상징적 의미를 전달하는 예들이 많다. 따라서 아동들은 그의 그림책들을 읽으면서 이해하고 공감하며 반복해서 읽을 때마다 새로운 의미를 찾게 된다.
앤서니 브라운의 일러스트레이션들은 주로 수채화 밑칠을 기본으로 한다. 그 위에 펜, 색연필, 세필 등을 사용하여 점과 짧은 선으로 그림의 밀도를 높인다. 그림 안에서 면은 단순히 한가지의 이미지로 읽히는 경우가 드물며, 독자의 연령, 성별, 배경지식에 따라 다양하게 인식된다. 이러한 다양한 해석의 가능성은 일러스트레이터의 의도적인 구성으로 특히 ‘이미지 안의 이미지’는 앤서니 브라운이 그린 일러스트레이션의 특징이다. 색 사용에 있어 인물 관계 및 정서의 변화, 상황의 인과관계 등을 고려하여 구조적ㆍ논리적인 색을 화면에 구현한다. 그의 작품에는 ‘고릴라’가 자주 등장하는데 동물의 털 하나까지 세밀하게 질감 표현에 공을 들인다. 주요 인물 및 동물뿐만 아니라 비현실적인 상황과 공간을 자세하고 사실적으로 묘사하여, 불가능을 가능한 것으로 보이게 만든다.
본 연구는 기초가 되는 조형요소 즉 점, 선, 면, 입체, 색, 질감, 빛, 시간, 공간의 기본적인 이론과 특징들을 이해하고, 각각의 조형요소가 중점적으로 활용된 그림책들을 살펴보았다. 수많은 그림책들 중에서 특히 앤서니 브라운의 그림책을 통해 하나의 예술로서의 좋은 그림책이 되기 위한 그림과 글의 조화, 다양한 해석의 가능성 등을 살펴보았다. 또한 앤서니 브라운의 일러스트레이션에 내재된 조형요소와 상징성을 분석하여 정리하였다.
