The present study investigated the occurrence of primary and secondary traumatization among police officers and compared job' stress and traumatic stress to predict burnout in 550 police officers from seoul, Bu-cheon, In-cheon's police services.
The Questionnaires contained a series of assessing their level of traumatic stress, job stress, burnout, locus of control, social support, coping style. These included Impact of Event Scale-Revised(IES-R), Job Stress Scale, Maslach Burnout Inventory(MBI), Internal- External control Scale(I-E Scale), Social support Scale, Ways of Coping Checklist(WCC),
The results reveal that 48% of participants reported symptoms in the clinically significant range of traumatic stress. Participants with higher IES-R scores and job' stress scores tended to higher MBI scores.
The identified level of job stress was predictive of burnout and level of traumatic stress was predictive of burnout. As Social support increases, levels of burnout decrease in IES-R high level group and as emotion-oriented coping style increases levels of burnout increases in job stress low level group.
Finally, implication and limitation of this study were discussed.
