In modern society, newspaper advertising has a long history and it is recognized as a very important media for advertising. A good advertising should be refined based on communication principles, and it should be able to get marketing goals and strategies achieved. Past studies tended to focus on the effect of advertising to consumers. Few studies have been done to identify the pattern of advertising creative.
This study aims to examine what advertising creative is shown most frequently and how effectively their meanings are delivered to newspaper viewers in car advertising. For the study, an extensive literary survey was conducted from domestic and foreign journals and dissertations. Based on the research, the study presumed that car newspaper advertising shows a unique pattern in its expression, advertising appeal and appeal focus.
A total of 337 car advertising posted in newspaper from Jan, 2006 - Nov, 2008 were used. For the aim of study, it sets up three analysis categories (advertising expression element, advertising appeal, and appeal focus), and it in turn breaks down the three into 40 sub-categories. To reduce subjective views and increase objectiveness and reliability, 2 art directors and one copywriter with 15 or more experience in ad company joined this study. For analysis, SPSS 12.0K program and χ²-test was used.
The study found followings:
First, the study explored how advertising expression elements are used in advertising. Outdoor location takes up 63.9% with artificial space (indoor setting) standing at 74.2%. Asymmetrical balance accounts for 58%, and style focus standing at 42.8%. Product-to-paper ratio of a third or less accounts for 78.5%. And colored ad takes up 98.9%, and static movements at 68.9%.
Second, the study explored advertising appeal of car ads. Appeal for general characteristics and benefits takes up 26%, with appeal for USP, brand image, positioning and SMP representing 23.8%, 17.1%, 19.1% and 14%, respectively.
Third, the study examines where the focus is placed in advertising appeal. First, in terms of product capability, focus on design takes up 32.1% with quality, performance, technology, convenience, economical price and safety standing at 20.3%, 19.4%, 11.4%, 7.7%, 5.6%, and 3.5%, respectively. In terms of emotions, focus on newness accounts for 28.1%, followed by individualism, social status, mysticism and leisure standing at 20.7%, 20.6%, 16.6%, and 14%, respectively.
The study only has a limitation of using domestic paper advertising, so more extensive study is needed to involve foreign paper ads. In addition, in order to identify needs of customers, future study should extend the analysis to identify paper ad in different periods and other characteristics.
