This is the action research regarding toddlers' process of adapting themselves to a child-care center (Henceforth, for the convenience's sake, child-care center is being called 'center' in short) and teacher's strategies helping them adapted to the center . To research teachers' strategies to help the toddlers and their parents overcome their psychological fear of being fitted to the center and adapt them to the center, this research sets some issues as follows;
1) What phenomena show up before being adapted to the center?
2) What process do toddlers get through to be adapted to the center?
3) What strategies do teachers use to make toddlers adapted to the center?
For this study, the researcher conducted the qualitative study of 8 children at K child-care center, researcher's workplace, in S city for about 5 months from March to July, 2008. Working on this qualitative study, the researcher analyzed the participation observation, in-deep interview and some materials related to this research.
Trough open coding procedure, the researcher analyzed the materials and conducted Categorical Aggregation, focusing on some meaningful occurrences to both toddlers and parents that were observed before and during being adapted to the center. Plus, Trianglulation is used in order to increase reliability and validity of the qualitative study.
From this process, this research came to conclusion as follows;
First, toddlers showed some maladjusted symptoms such as crying, health problems, psychological unstability and jealousy before being full-adapted. For parents, anxieties of their toddlers' maladjusted behaviors & health problems and their difficulties in supporting the maladjusted as working mom were seen right after toddlers entered the center. Some toddlers and parents faced the serious problem, "renouncing adapting them to the center" because they couldn't get over toddlers' maladjusted behaviors and parents' anxieties.
Second, while accustomed to the center, toddlers were a lot affected by human environment and physical environment at the same time. That is, human environment effects such as communication with teachers, participation in a play and getting along with peers were helpful to adaptation process , and as physical environment effects, toddlers achieved the final stage, "the stably adapted stage", after going through the first stage "getting used to the center", the second stage "getting intimate to the teachers", and then, "comfortably separating from parents at the center". On the one hand, parents got used to the center and expressed their relief and gratitude after counseling with teachers and delivering their own requests to the teachers.
Third, teachers' strategies were largely divided into the strategies for toddlers and the strategies for parents respectively. As for the strategies for toddlers, this research found out sensibility, getting attention, responding, reading what children want, playing with, helping their difficulties, treating them warmly, and letting them know some essential rules. And to help the worried parents, teachers made use of quickly delivering toddlers' adaptation process to them in detail and planting hopes for their toddlers to be well adapted to the center. With these strategies, toddlers and parents were getting to trust teachers. In the end, they did.
As seen in this study, both toddlers and parents showed some anxieties and maladjusted behaviors before getting adapted to the center, which can be overcome with enough human and physical supports and interests. In particular, it is so vital that the teachers in field help toddlers and parents adapted to the center with the suitable strategies providing them with the right direction until they feel secure.
