The purposes of this study were to promote parents' awareness on their children's basic etiquette and to design the effective guiding method of basic etiquette training in association with home by studying the effect of basic etiquette education associated with home on the formation of young children's self-conception and basic etiquette. Thus, the research topics assigned to this study are as following.
Question 1. What influence does the basic-etiquette-education in
association with home have on the formation of young children's self-conception?
Question 2. What influence does the basic-etiquette-education in
association with home have on the formation of young
children's basic etiquette?
This study was conducted targeting 30 five-year-old kids attending a private kindergarten located in Suwon. Divided into groups of 15, both the comparison group and the experimental group received the same basic etiquette training in class. In addition to this, the experimental group was engaged in extra home-school correspondence training by sending to the parents related materials such as teachers' letter and the evaluation book called "I'll be the king of promises" The process of the study consisted of a preliminary research, a pretest, 12 weeks' training and a posttest. The training took place once a week from Apr. 30, 2007 to Jul. 20, 2007, totaling 12 times. In order to see the difference of the formation of basic etiquette after the home-school correspondence training, a questionnaire on the formation of basic etiquette was distributed to and collected from parents before and after the training. To measure kids' self-conception, the tool designed by Lee, Hyun-kyung(2004) was used.
The collected data was verified through the software program, SPSS WIN 11.5. Through all these processes, the following results are deduced.
First, the experimental group who trained with the home-school correspondence education showed a higher mark in the total self-conception score than the comparison group who had the basic etiquette education only in the kindergarten, and there was a substantial difference statistically.
Second, the experimental group who trained with the home-school correspondence education showed a higher mark in the total self-conception-formation score than the comparison group who had the basic etiquette education only in the kindergarten, and there was a substantial difference statistically. They also showed higher marks in the sub-fields of basic etiquette (cleanliness, manner and temperance) and a statistically substantial difference as well.
Therefore, judging from these results, the basic etiquette education in association with home has positive effects on the formation of young children's self-conception and basic etiquette. Hence, if the basic etiquette education programs in association with home are considered and researched in various ways, there should be greater influences on the positive development of young children's behaviors.
