Recently the Internet industry is growing rapidly throughout the world, and the total amount trade through Internet shopping in China has reached 56.1 billon Yuan in 2007. In particular, fashion products occupy a large part of Internet transactions, amounting 7.22 billion Yuan as it has increased by 35.5% compared to the previous year. In Korea as well, the trade of clothing and fashion?related products in Internet shopping malls has reached 2,714 billion won in 2007 and this amount is 18.8% of Internet transactions, the largest among the product categories.
Considering the size and growth potential of the Internet apparel market in China, Korean apparel companies need to consider active advance to the Chinese Internet market, and therefore, it is necessary to understand Chinese Internet environment and Internet buyers’ characteristics and to establish suitable marketing strategies.
The present study compared Korean and Chinese university students’ motive for Internet purchase of clothes and their evaluation of web site attributes, and examined differences in motives for purchase and web site attributes affecting satisfaction with Internet purchase and repurchase intention between Korean and Chinese university students. For this, we conducted a questionnaire survey of male and female university students who had experienced the use of Internet shopping malls to buy clothing products in Korea and China. We analyzed 300 questionnaires for each country, so a total of 600 questionnaires, and performed frequency analysis, factor analysis, regression analysis, and t?test using SPSS 12.0.
The results of this study are as follows.
Korean and Chinese university students’ motives for the Internet purchase of clothes are composed of value of product, shopping convenience, low price, and pleasure. When motives for the Internet purchase of clothes were compared between Korean and Chinese university students, Korean students pursued value of product more than Chinese ones, and Chinese students pursued pleasure and low price more than Korean ones.
Korean consumers’ repurchase intention was high when they pursued low price highly and value of product lowly, and Chinese consumers’ repurchase intention was high when they pursued low price and information highly. In addition, the pursuit of value of product and the pursuit of shopping convenience had an effect on repurchase intention via purchase satisfaction.
Korean and Chinese university students’ perception of the attributes of fashion shopping mall web sites was composed of the dimensions of product quality, economical efficiency, information quality, site composition, and service quality. Chinese consumers evaluated service quality and information quality higher than Korean consumers.
Korean consumers’ repurchase intention was affected by product quality and service quality, and Chinese consumers’ repurchase intention was affected by product quality, information quality and site composition. Accordingly, what were important to Korean university students were attributes related to transaction in Internet purchase, and those to Chinese university students were attributes related to information search.
