The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of perceived parenting behavior and self-concept on the relationship between symptoms of ADHD and internalizing problems/externalizing problems of middle school boys.
The subjects for this study were 326 boys of 2nd and 3th grade in two middle schools. Students completed the following questionnaries: Conners-Wells` Adolescent Self-Report Scale(Short Form), Perceived Parenting Behavior Inventory, Self-Perception Profile Adolescents(SPPA), and Korean Youth Self- Report(K-YSR).
The results of the study are as followings.
First, Inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms of ADHD were significantly associated with perceived parenting behavior, self-concept and internalizing problems/externalizing problems.
Second, The results of structural equation models showed that the relationship between symptoms of ADHD and internalizing problems/externalizing problems through mediating effects of perceived parenting behavior and self-concept.
The result of fitting of model for inattention symptom of ADHD, perceived father`s parenting behavior, self-concept and internalizing problems/externalizing problems showed that both direct path from inattention symptom to internalizing problems and indirect path from inattention symptom to internalizing problems through perceived father`s parenting behavior and self-concept were significant. And indirect path from inattention symptom to externalizing problems through perceived father`s parenting behavior and self-concept was significant.
The result of fitting of model for inattention symptom, perceived mother`s parenting behavior, self-concept and internalizing problems/externalizing problems showed that direct path from inattention symptom to internalizing problems and indirect path from inattention symptom to internalizing problems through only self-concept were significant. But perceived mother`s parenting behavior has no mediation effect. And indirect path from inattention symptom to externalizing problems through perceived mother`s parenting behavior and self-concept was significant. But direct path from inattention symptom to externalizing problems was not significant.
The result of fitting of model for hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom of ADHD, perceived father`s parenting behavior, self-concept and internalizing problems/ externalizing problems showed that both direct path from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to internalizing problems and indirect path from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to internalizing problems through perceived father`s parenting behavior were significant. The result showed that direct path from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to externalizing problems and from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to self-concept were not significant. Indirect path from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to externalizing problems through perceived father`s parenting behavior was significant. And indirect path from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to self-concept through perceived father`s parenting behavior and direct path from self-concept to internalizing problems/externalizing problems were significant.
The result of fitting of model for hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom, perceived mother`s parenting behavior, self-concept and internalizing problems/externalizing problems showed that direct path from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to internalizing problems and direct path from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to externalizing problems were significant. Indirect path from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to internalizing problems and externalizing problems through perceived mother`s parenting behavior and self-concept was significant. And indirect path from perceived mother`s parenting behavior to internalizing problems was not significant. Direct path from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to perceived mother`s parenting behavior was significant. Direct path from hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom to self-concept through perceived mother`s parenting behavior was significant.
On the Basis of these result, it was confirmed that partial mediating effects of perceived parenting behavior and self-concept on the symptoms of ADHD and internalizing problems / externalizing problem.
