This thesis examines the issue of advertisement language in terms of cognitive linguistics, based on television and radio advertisement materials. The issue covered in this thesiscan be classified into three parts. First, issue of implication and deduction in advertisement language. Second, formation factors of humorous advertisement text and its meaning interpretation process. Third, issue of metrical modification in advertisement language which is used to influence advertisement recipients’ perception. Accordingly, this thesis is composed of three sections.
Relevance Theory by D. Sperber and D. Wilson is the theoretical basis of the whole thesis. Chagyun Kim’s Metrical Theory that has been developed by Chagyun Kim since 1959 is the theoretical basis regarding the section on the research of the cognitive linguistics in meters of advertisement language.
The methodology used in this thesis is as follows. First, in the section of implication and deduction of advertisement language, advertisement language was classified according to the level of implication, and the meaning interpretation process was contemplated the existence of internal issues in the context and the characteristics of the issues. Second, in the section of formation of humorous advertisement text and its meaning interpretation process, the formative factors of humorous colloquy was clarified through inquiry of its principles, and the process of meaning interpretation was examined according to the level of function of the established formation. Lastly, in the section of cognitive linguistics research of advertisement language meters, the issue of metrical modification in advertisement language was approached in terms of phonic phase and acoustic image by applying Chagyun Kim’s Metrical Theory.
The major outcome of the thesis according to each section is as below.
First, the section of implication and deduction of advertisement language;
To begin with, the advertisementlanguage was classified into implicit advertisement language and non-implicit advertisement language, according to the level of implication. The implicit advertisement language was then assorted into low implicit advertisement language and high implicit advertisement language, according to the level of obscurity. The meaning interpretation for low implicit advertisement language is conducted through confirming and solving the non-correspondence of the internal context such as disharmony and non-succession within the meanings. The meaning interpretation for high implicit advertisement language is carried out through confirming and solving the void within the internal context. The meaning interpretation for non-implicit advertisement language is performed by applying the superficial meaning of the sentences to the context, on condition that there is no problem within the context. If the meaning interpretation process is generalized by putting together the common factors, the process for the meaning interpretation of advertisement language is “Confirm -> Search -> Understand-> Deduct meaning”, and it can be drawn into a diagram as below.
Second, in the section of formation factors of humorous advertisement text and its meaning interpretation process;
First, the formation factors of the humorous colloquy was analyzed and determined into three classifications -unpredictability (established formation), predictability (restraint condition) and laughter inducing mechanism (colloquy characteristics). Accordingly, humorous colloquy is established through application of centrifugal force and centripetal force of recipients’ presupposition, along with the humorous colloquy characteristics. Second, the established formation and restraint condition of the humorous colloquy is applied in three levels - colloquy context level, situation level and metatext level. Through these levels the formation principle of humorous colloquy wasdeducted. Third, the unpredictability and inconsistency of definite realization appears accordingly as inconsistency in context, situational leap, and heterogeneity of metatext, based on the level of humorous colloquy. The process for the meaning interpretation of humorous colloquy is “Confirm -> Search -> Understand-> Deduct meaning”. However, it has become clear that the interpretation process reflects the inconsistency so the meaning deduction accepts the inconsistency. Acceptance is a concept that means deducting meanings through non-metaphorical interpretation. In this thesis it is explained with much importance that when solving contractions between expression and context, the meaning interpretation of humorous colloquy has opposite bearings with metaphorical interpretation.
If the outcome of the thesis regarding the meaning interpretation process of humorous colloquy is generalized by putting together the common factors, it can be summarized as below.
Lastly, in the section of cognitive linguistics research of advertisement language meters, the issue of metrical modification in advertisement language which is used to influence advertisement recipients’perception is examined. The major outcome of the research is as follows. First, according to the metrical analysis of advertisement language, the intonation patterns of standard Korean stated by Chagyun Kim (1998) is in unstable conduction due to the influence of various regional dialects. This phenomenon has enabled advertisements to more freely modify intonations. Second, through analysis of detail aspects of metrical modifications in advertisement language, it has come to light that the various methods of metrical modifications influences the perception of the recipients by creating phonic phases and promoting acoustic images.
