Domestic film industry has been achieved a remarkable growth in the last ten years, such as more than 110 movies produced, more than 60% of market share, and the birth of a movie which records 10 million cinema audiences. However, there is seemingly no study on the cause of growth of domestic film industry.
Preceding studies on cinema audiences have been centered on the process of decision-making which has to do with audiences' decision-making, the sources of information which has to do with decision-making, the innate attributes of movies which have to do with the selection and evaluation of movies, and consumers' motive and experience of movie-seeing.
In this regard, the investigator examined movies' service aspects and characteristics of empirical commodities to understand consumers' behaviors on the basis of preceding studies on consumers' exploration of information from the process of decision-making to the process of risk avoidance, and their sources of information.
In addition, the investigator looked into such studies that regard the factors of box office as replacement variables of movie selection factors and examined the influence of such movie selection factors as directors, actors and actresses, stories, and genres upon the intention of seeing, on the basis of the Korean Film Council's questionnaire survey of audiences on the criteria of decision-making of seeing movies in 2005 and 2006.
The investigator also examined the influence of marketing factors, such as visually oriented film posters, movie copy, and overall images of a movie, upon the intention of seeing, on the basis the factors of high concepts appeared in "Hollywood Marketing" by Justin Wyatt, except such factors that overlapping with the above box office factors.
Finally, on the assumption that the posters, copy, and images, borrowed from Wyatt's high concept factors, are the characteristics of high concept-type Hollywood movies, the influence of such marketing factors of the Korea-US movies as posters, copy, and images upon the intention of seeing was examined in order to find out the disposition difference of audiences between Korea and US or to draw some suggestions for movie marketing.
This study was empirically carried out with hypotheses established on the basis of preceding studies and study models. A questionnaire survey of audiences in their 20s was carried out to collect data. Collected data were processed with the statistical program of SPSS 11.0 for Windows. The investigator also carried out reliability analysis, factor analysis, regression analysis, and t-test on the measured variables, according to the purposes of analysis.
Study findings are as follows:
First, as for the factors of movie selection (directors, actors and actresses, stories, and genres), actors and actresses and stories have a significant influence upon the intention of seeing.
Second, as for the factors of marketing (posters, copy, and images), posters have no significant influence upon the intention of seeing whereas copy and images have a significant influence upon it.
Finally, the variables of American movies have a more significant influence upon the intention of seeing than those of Korean movies. This shows that although Korean film industry's market share is bigger, audiences have a more positive image for American movies.
By examining the influence of movie selection factors and marketing factors upon the intention of seeing, this study presents basic data to analogize consumers' exploration and evaluation of information as an action to avoid risks, and to estimate consumers' decision-making steps. This study is meaningful in that study subjects were the movies not off-show but on-show centering on a variety of selection factors which were studied as box office factors of movies in the past.
