The purposes of this study were to investigate how fathers' parenting behavior and the adolescents' personality are related to adolescents' self-concept and to examine fathers' parenting behavior, the adolescents' personality and self-concept depending on adolescents' academic achievement level or the amount of communication with the father.
Subjects were 310 (142 boys and 168 girls) 9th and 10th grade middle and high school students living in Suncheon City in Jellanamdo. The research instruments used in the present study included a father's parenting behavior questionnaire (developed for this study and composed of 40 items), NEO-PI-R (Costa & McCrae, 1992), and a Self-Concept Testing Questionnaire(Korean Testing Center, 1968) which was corrected for this study.
The data were anaylzed by frequencies, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Cronbach’s ㉪, one way ANOVA and Duncan test, and multiple regression using SPSSWIN 16.0.
Major findings were as follows:
First, fathers' parenting behavior was different according to adolescents' academic achievement level or the amount of communication with the father. The higher the adolescents' academic achievement level, their father was perceived more performance-oriented and warmth/reasonable. On the other hand, the higher the adolescents' academic achievement level, the less their fathers' coercive parenting. There was no difference in fathers' permissive parenting according to the adolescents' academic achievement level.
The more the adolescents' amount of communication with father, their father was perceived more performance-oriented and warmth/reasonable by adolescents. But the more the adolescents' amount of communication with father, the less fathers' permissive and coercive parenting.
Second, adolescents' personality was different according to their academic achievement level or the amount of communication with the father. The higher the adolescents' academic achievement level, they had more conscientiousness and less neuroticism personality. But there was no difference depending the adolescents' academic achievement level in extraversion, openness to extraversion, and agreeableness personality.
The more the adolescents' amount of communication with father, they had more conscientiousness, agreeableness, extraversion personality and less neuroticism personality. But there was no difference depending the adolescents' amount of communication with father in openness to extraversion personality. Third, the adolescents' self-concept was different depending on their academic achievement level or the amount of communication with the father. The higher the adolescents' academic achievement level and the amount of communication with father, adolescents had more positive self-identity, self-acceptance, and self-behavior concept.
Fourth, fathers' parenting behavior, adolescents' personality and self-concept were related.
Fifth, fathers' warmth/resonable parenting and adolescents' extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness personality predicted adolescents' self-identity, self-acceptance, self-behavior concept. The more fathers' warmth/resonable parenting, adolescents' extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness personality, adolescents had more positive self-identity, self-acceptance, and self-behavior concept.
