This thesis is designed to study the utilization of Korean paper in art therapy and its consequent influence on children who suffer from intellectual disability. The specific objectives this study carries are as follows: 1) a precise analysis on the effects of the Korean paper art therapy upon the depressive behavior of intellectually disabled children through the comparison between prior and posterior K-CBCL (Korean-Child Behavior Checklist) scores, 2) a thorough grasp via KHTP (Kinetic-House-Tree-Person) tests as to whether the Korean paper actually helps to generate the improvement in the very depressive behavior, 3) a keen insight in the progress of this art therapy on an ongoing basis by monitoring their behavioral changes.
In order to fulfill above points, an art therapy program was practically applied to a 12-year-old primary school girl with intellectual disability, who attended 000 Welfare Center of 000 City. The program took place twice a week (approximately 50 minutes a meeting) from January 2008. The entire program ended in April 28, 2008 and a total of 25 meetings were carried out.
Her changes were analyzed quantitatively by the K-CBCL scores. In the meantime, the KHTP tests were performed to qualitatively figure out if any behavioral differences occurred in her after the program’s operation. And the result was magnificent with positively unbelievable statistics;
First, the average raw score of the K-CBCL was lowered by 13 points from 16.5 to 3.5 points―they are 99 and 52.5 points respectively for T-score. Secondly, the KHTP tests taken prior and posterior to the program outputted a plain result showing a sound decrease in the frequencies of her depressive behavior. In a multitude of tests, she was proven to draw pictures on Korean papers with constant pen pressure. Furthermore, she drew such objects as windows and mouths in their right places, balancing their positions on the sketch without mishap, which implied the establishment of self-esteem in her followed by that of improved communication ability. Also, the aforementioned improvements became clear by monitoring her activities.
The more she participated in the program, the more familiar she became with using diverse colors as well as freely choosing what to express.
In conclusion, this research has confirmed that the Korean paper art therapy certainly resulted in the improvement of those intellectually disabled children who had difficulty communicating, and thus expressing their emotions caused by their depressive behavior, i.e., the therapy was sure to encourage them to gain self-esteem. Therefore, noticeable in this research was that Korean paper echoing our sentiments and its materials born out of our physical environment naturally brought out the children’s profoundly veiled emotions.
Key words: Korean paper art therapy, intellectually disabled children, depressive behavior
