<Yui-yangmunrok> is the saga novel, dealing with the story about three generations of two families, the Yoos and the Lees. The work in 77 volumes is the only book, which is owned by Jangseogak in The Academy of Korean Studies under existing circumstances. This dissertation is based on the above-mentioned data.

In this dissertation, I have intended to look into the literary value of <Yui-yangmunrok> by considering deeply in three resspects; the aspects of conflicts, the ways of organization of conflicts, and amind of the author, then such study as this has never been made seriously up to the present, I think.

In the 2nd chapter of this dissertation, I have studied the aspects of conflicts in <Yui-yangmunrok>. The conflict on early stage of <Yui-yangmunrok> has remained unsolved until the characters in the story was dead, but was brought to settlement flawlessy after the transmigration. I regard such a structure of story as a kind of significance. Also, It is interesting that a good man brings to a conclusion of the conflict seamlessly through the transmigration, but a bad man was dead again according to the rule of retribution, leading to the more conflicts after the transmigration. Besides the more characters increase in number and the more interval is far, the more conflicts are intensified. In thisnovel with ancient China as its setting, It seems to be very peculiar that Keumkangsan in Korea is set up as where is the land of solution and the buffer zone of all troubles.

In the 3rd chapter of this dissertation,I have studied the technique for the organization of the plot. First of all, I have clarified my opinion, which is that <Yui-yangmunrok> accomplish it's purpose, making a success of a fictitious plot. In order to be such a sturucture, the novel is being combined a story about two families with a story about the accumulated generations effectively. And I have clarified that <Yui-yangmunrok>was influenced by not only the extensive historic knowledge about the ancient China, but also the nature stroll at home in the letter part of "Chosun" and the other novel in those days. Even though there are not the historical charaters in <Yui-yangmunrok>, this novel is a well-organized literary work in a point of view that the fictitious characters were solving the historical events and were described elaborately in those period. Besides, It seemed that the author of this novel was good at describing efficiently through the diversification of the point of view and the modulation of the narrative tempo.

A mind of the author was examined conscientiously in the 4th chapter. The author regarded the family’s recovery and the maintenance of the family’s sanctity as the best worth, however tended to pursue the utility than the obligation. Also the author empasized the role of woman to maintain the family and stated the importance of the connubial bliss.

Lastly, the 5th chapter dealt with the meaning of the ancient Korean novel history through the narrative frame and a mind of the author in <Yui-yangmunrok> above-mentioned. I take notice of various literary experiments, conjectured to make an attempt deliverately in <Yui-yangmunrok> from the 3rd chapter to the 4th chapter. It seems to be very efficient that such a notice makes light up the peculiarity of this novel and the reason of the consummation being the longest novel among the genre, the story about two families. Through the study of <Yui-yangmunrok> groping the way of efficeint narrative ploting by combining a story about two families with a story about the accumulated generations, I hope that I will give a clue for the know-how in order to make a narrative ploting by using the frame of the story about two families.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

<유이양문록>은 유씨와 이씨라는 두 가문의 3대에 걸친 이야기를 다루고 있는 대장편소설이다. 현재는 한국학중앙연구원 장서각에 소장된 77권본(이하 장서각본)이 유일하게 남아있으며 본고는 이 자료를 대상으로 연구를 진행하였다.

본고에서는 이제까지 본격적으로 연구된 적이 없는 <유이양문록>의 작품세계를 갈등양상과 형상화 방법과 작가의식 면에서 세밀히 살펴봄으로써 <유이양문록>의 작품성을 구명해 보았다.

본고의 Ⅱ장에서는 <유이양문록>의 갈등양상에 대해 살펴보았다. <유이양문록> 전반부의 갈등은 죽은 이후까지 해결되지 않다가 다시 환생한 후에야 갈등의 완벽한 해결을 이루는 것이 특징이다. 선인은 환생을 통해 전생에서의 갈등을 편안히 종결하는 반면 악인은 환생한 후에 더 많은 갈등을 야기하다가 인과응보의 법칙에 따라 다시 죽게 되는 과정을 보인다는 점이 흥미롭다. 또, <유이양문록>의 갈등은 인물이 증가할수록, 공간이 멀어질수록 심화되는 양상을 보이는데, 중국을 배경으로 하는 이 작품에서 갈등의 잠재적 해결지이자 완충지로 한국의 금강산을 설정해 놓은 점도 아주 특이하다고 볼 수 있다.

본고의 Ⅲ장에서는 <유이양문록>의 형상화 기법에 대해 살펴보았다. 먼저 <유이양문록>의 구조를 분석하여 양문형구조와 누대형구조가 효과적으로 결합되어 성공적인 장편화를 이루고 있음을 밝히고, 작품 창작의 배경에 폭넓은 역사지식과 조선후기 와유전통은 물론 <이현경전>을 비롯한 당대의 다른 소설과의 직접적 영향관계가 있음을 밝혀내었다. <유이양문록>은 역사적 실존 인물이 등장하지는 않지만 허구의 인물인 주인공들이 역사적 사건을 해결하면서 그 시대를 살아가는 과정을 치밀하게 묘사하고 있어 배경으로서의 역사를 작품 안으로 자연스럽게 끌어올 뿐 아니라, 사건의 구성과 서술의 기교면에서도 시점의 다각화 및 서사의 완급조절 등을 통해 치밀하게 구성하고 있는 잘 짜여진 작품이다.

본고의 Ⅳ장에서는 <유이양문록>의 작가의식에 대해 살펴보았다. <유이양문 록>의 작가는 가문을 회복하고 안정적 질서를 유지하는 것을 최상의 가치로 삼으면서도 명분보다는 실리를 추구하는 양면적 성향을 보이기도 하며, 가문을 유지하기 위한 여성의 역할도 강조하며 부부화락의 중요성에 대해서도 피력하고 있다.

이상에서 드러난 <유이양문록>의 서사구조와 작가의식을 통해 <유이양문록>의 소설사적 의의를 논한 것이 Ⅴ장이다. 필자는 Ⅲ장과 Ⅳ장에서 이 작품의 잘 짜여진 구성에 주목하여 <유이양문록>에서 의도적으로 시도되고 있다고 보이는 다양한 문학적 실험들에 주목하였는데, 이는 <유이양문록>의 특징을 밝히는 데 도움이 될 뿐 아니라, <유이양문록>이 양문록 양식의 가문소설 가운데 가장 장편으로 자리매김하게 된 이유를 밝히는 데에도 도움이 되리라 생각했기 때문이다. 양문형구조와 누대형 결합을 통해 합법적인 장편화의 길을 모색한 <유이양문록>연구를 통해 양문형 구조를 이용한 장편가문소설의 장편화 방법에 대해서도 일말의 실마리를 제공할 것으로 기대한다.
