The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between anger expression patterns and social adjustment of adolescents.
The questions of this study were as follows:
First, are there any gender differences in the anger expression patterns?
Second, are there any gender differences in adolescents' social adjustment?
Third, are there any differences in anger expression patterns between high school students and middle school students?
Forth, are there any differences in social adjustment between high school students and middle school students?
Fifth, are there any relationships between adolescents' anger expression patterns and social adjustment?
In order to solve study questions, this study performed the survey about 470(boys:225, girls:245) seventh and tenth graders in middle and high school in Cheongju City, Chungbuk Province. The instruments for measuring were the Anger Expression Scale revised by Jeon Gyeom-gu(1997) and the subjects' social adjustment by Jeon Mi-hyang(1997) who extracted items related to sociality from the existing scales and then translated, revised, and supplemented them. The collected data were t-tested with the SAS program.
The research results were summarized as follows:
First, there were no significant differences in the anger expression patterns.
Second, there were gender differences in adolescents' social adjustment. The girls scored significantly higher points in interpersonal relations and impulsivity than the boys. It means that the girls maintained better interpersonal relations than the boys and, at the same time, were more impulsive and thus more affected by their mood than the boys.
Third, there were significant differences in social adjustment between the high school students and middle school students. The high school students scored significantly higher points in anger-control than the middle school students. It indicates that the former group controled their anger better than the latter group.
Fourth, there were no significant differences in social adjustment between the high school students and middle school students.
And fifth, there were significant relationships between adolescents' anger expression patterns and social adjustment. As a result, the high level students of anger-in and anger-out recorded showed the low level of social adjustment. And the high level students of anger-control adjusted to the society better. It's also evident that too much anger-in could lead to problems with interpersonal relations, adjustment, and impulsivity and that too much anger-out could result in problems with adjustment and impulsivity. On the contrary, better anger-control leads to higher adjustment, less impulsivity, and more sense of responsibility, all of which means better social adjustment.
