The purpose of this research was to uncover the relative impact of children's temperament, mother's characteristics, and parent's child-rearing agreement on mother's parenting stress. Subjects of this study were mothers of 293 preschoolers, being aged 3 to 5 years old from five kindergartens placed in Ahn-yang city and Em-sung gun. Data were analyzed with Pearson's correlation and heirarchical Regression by using SPSS program.
The results were as follows:
First, step 1 examined the impact of children's temperament including emotional sensitivity and sociality on mother's parenting stress. Result showed that children's emotional sensitivity increased mother's parenting stress while their sociality decreased it.
Second, step 2 analyzed the impact of mother's characteristics including extroversion and neuroticism in addition to children's temperament on mother's parenting stress. Children's emotional sensitivity and mother's neuroticism positively predicted mother's parenting stress. By contrast, mother's parenting stress was negatively predicted by the level of mother's extroversion.
Third, step 3 examined the relative impact of parent's child-rearing agreement in addition to children's temperament and mother's characteristics on mother's parenting stress. Children's emotional sensitivity and mother's neuroticism had a positive impact on mother's parenting stress and mother's extroversion had a negative impact on mother's parenting stress.
Moreover, couple's child-rearing agreement showed a negative influence on mother's parenting stress.
