This study aimed at examining whether a play-based self-efficacy enhancement program reduces depression in neglected children and improves their self efficacy. The subjects of the study were 4 children who in the child protective agency which is located in Gyeongsangnam-do report in the child who is received and obtained significant scores, deression/anxiety scores measured by using Korean-Child Behavior Checklist(K-CBCL) were above 70T.
In the study, the following research questions were addressed.
First, is the play-based self-efficacy enhancement program effective in reducing depression(negative self esteem, ineffectiveness, negative mood, anhedonia, interpersonal problem) in neglected children?
Second, self-efficacy enhancement program effective in improving self-efficacy of neglected children?
The play-based self-efficacy enhancement program reduces put an emphasis on intervention strategies using success experience, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and physical and emotional state. In addition, it also emphasized motivation, the facilitation of volunteering, active participation among the therapeutic elements of play. With regard to the implementation of the program, a total of 12 sessions were conducted twice in a week. A session was composed of relaxation(15minutes), structured activity(35minutes), discussion(10minutes), and free play(20minutes).
The changes depression in neglected children were self report depression scale scores before and after the implementation of the program were measured and compared. Besides, the changes in the children' depressive behaviors were explored by an index of depression behavior during program sessions. In addition, the changes in the children' self-efficacy were scale scores before and after the implementation program were measured and compared. And to examine changes in behaviors related to self-efficacy, we analyzed children's behavior observed in free play situation.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, the play-based social self-efficacy enhancement program reduced depression in neglected children.
Second, the play-based social self-efficacy enhancement program improved the self-efficacy neglected children's self-efficacy.
Third, the play-based social self-efficacy enhancement program reduced depressive behaviors of neglected children and improved neglected children's self-efficacy behaviors.
Therfore, the study has limitations of generalizing the results, as it involved a few cases. However the result showed the play-based self-efficacy enhancement program reduces depression in neglected children and improved their self-efficacy.
