The purpose of this study was to examine the relation among multiple intelligence, emotional intelligence and musical achievement, and to provide basic materials in seeking direction for accomplishing the goals of music study as education for the whole man. In order to achieve such purposes research questions were addressed as follows: First, how are multiple intelligence, emotional intelligence and musical achievement related?; Second, does emotional intelligence show any difference according to the level of multiple intelligence?; Third, does musical achievement show any difference according to the level of multiple intelligence?; Fourth, does musical achievement show any difference according to the level of emotional intelligence?
The subjects of the study included 210 female students from six third year classes of C middle school in Seoul. As for research instruments, K-MIDAS (Kim, Hyeon-jin, 1998), which added questions of naturalist intelligence to Multiple Intelligences Developmental Assessment Scales (MIDAS) developed by Shearer(1995), was employed to test multiple intelligence. Also, Kang, Min-soo's application version of a test of emotional intelligence for adolescents which Moon, Yong-lin had created on the basis of the recent emotional intelligence model of Mayer and Salovey(1997) was used to test emotional intelligence. The tests were carried out for a week from March 17th to March 24th, 2008 and the test results of 186 students except for those who answered insincerely were analyzed.
The data collected through empirical investigation were coded and then analyzed using SPSS 13.0 for WINDOWS. In order to examine the relation among multiple intelligence, emotional intelligence, and musical achievement, a reliability test was performed, and average and standard deviation were calculated. Besides, Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated and t-test was carried out to analyze the differences between groups.
The following results were obtained from the study.
First, a partly significant relation existed between multiple intelligence and emotional intelligence, between multiple intelligence and musical achievement, and emotional intelligence and musical achievement.
Second, there were significant differences in emotional intelligence according to the level of multiple intelligences. Interpersonal intelligence showed differences with regard to all of emotional intelligence areas. Overall, multiple intelligence displayed partial differences with respect to emotional areas except for emotion regulation area.
Third, overall, significant differences in musical achievement were detected according to the level of multiple intelligences. That is, musical achievement was different according to whether groups' scores for musical intelligence, logical-mathematical intelligence, linguistic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, ant intrapersonal intelligence were high or low.
Fourth, overall, significant differences in musical achievement were detected according to the level of emotional intelligence. That is, musical achievement was different according to whether groups' scores for the appraisal and expression of emotion, empathy, facilitation of thinking, and regulation of emotion were high or low.
Although there are some limitations in generalizing the study results, the study found that multiple intelligence, emotional intelligence and musical achievement positively affect one another. The results can be usefully employed in the field of music education in cognitive and definitive aspects. In accordance with periodical changes, it is necessary to make ceaseless efforts to improve individual students' various peculiar abilities and to develop music teaching-learning method for education for the whole man by employing new intelligence concepts such as multiple intelligence and emotional intelligence.
