Purpose: This study is a descriptive correlation to offer preliminary information to elevate the quality of life and health state of the elderly by studying the relationships among the style of anger expression, depression, and family support.
Method: The focus groups of the study consisted of 372 male and female people over the age of 65 living in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do. The period of data collection was November 23, 2007 to January 23, 2008.
The reference used for the style of anger expression is the STAXI by Chon(1996), the Korean version of STAXI(State Anger Expression Inventory) by Spielberger(1988). The reference used for depression is a tool by Chon(1989) which corrected and supplemented the Self Rating Depression Scale by Zung(1965). The reference used for family support is the tool developed by Choi(1983) corrected and supplemented by Kang (1984). The reference used for quality of life is the Korean version of WHOQOL-BREF by Min(2000).
The data was analyzed via SAS, and depending on the research purpose, number, percent, average, standard deviation, Pearson Correlation, Stepwise Multiple Regression, t-test, ANOVA, DUNCAN, and post verification were carried out.
Results: The survey data reveals the following:
1. The style of anger expression of the elderly is somewhat high, depression is intermediate, and family support and the quality of life are more or less high.
2. The relationships between the style of anger expression of the elderly, depression, family support, and quality of life indicate there is strong inverse correlation between family support and the quality of life in the style of anger expression and next, a strong inverse correlation between family support and quality of life and depression, and lastly a strong direct correlation between quality of life and family support.
3. According to the general attributes, the style of anger expression has a statistically meaningful difference among sex distinction, children, and cost of living, depression among age, educational background, religion, allowance, cost of living, and health state, family support among sex distinction, age, educational background, the form of dwelling, children, allowance, cost of living, and health state, and the quality of life among sex distinction, age, educational background, a religion, allowance, cost of living, and health state.
Conclusion: Judging from the above results, the style of anger expression is a key factor and has an impact on quality of life. Family support is also the source of the encourage of life. Therefore, in order to control the elderly’s anger through family support, nursing intercession to promote quality of life should be considered.
