The purpose of this study was to investigate relations between reading motivation and reading achievement in middle school students. The main hypotheses to be tested were as follows:
Hypothesis 1: There will be significant correlations between relations of reading motivation and reading achievement in middle school students.
Hypothesis 2: Correlations will show significant differences between boys and girls.
Hypothesis 3: Correlations will show significant differences 2nd and 3rd grades.
Hypothesis 4: There will be significant multiple correlations between relations of reading motivation and reading achievement in middle school students.
The subjects of this study were 413 middle school boys and girls students sampled randomly by their teachers among twelve classes in two middle schools in Jinju city.
The tool which is used for examination in this thesis is Motivation for Reading Questionnaire by Wigfield & Guthrie(1997) and reading achievement.
Main findings of the study were as follows:
First, there were significant correlations between relations of reading motivation and reading achievement in middle school students.
Second, correlations were different significantly between boys and girls 2nd grade students in the middle school . On the other hand, correlations were not different significantly between boys and girls in 3rd grade students.
Third, correlations were not different significantly between 2nd and 3rd grade students.
Fourth, some multiple correlations between reading motivation and reading achievement were significant statistically.
