This study set out to create some works by using the form characteristics of the skirts during Chosun. For that, the investigator consulted literature to understand the origin of Korean skirts and the changes to the ancient skirts and focused on the Chosun period which left abundant data regarding the wearing methods, compositions, shapes and textiles of skirts. Then I examined the changing factors of the Hanbok skirts seen on the cat walk, at wedding ceremonies, or at parties. After reviewing the concepts, changing process, uses, and shapes of ancient skirts, I developed Korean-style skirts by using the expressive methods and form characteristics of modern Hanbok skirts to promote the superior nature of the Korean design in harmony between the traditional clothing and modernity and differentiate it from others.
Although it's not certain since when Korean people started to wear skirts let alone the origin of the term skirt, it's well accepted that skirts appeared many years ago, developed during the Three Kingdoms period, and passed down to Chosun when their shapes were adjusted. The changing process of skirts is well depicted in the murals from the Three Kingdoms period to Goryeo. For Chosun, the shapes of skirts were examined along with the periodic backgrounds.
The Chosun period was divided into the former and latter half. In the former half, there was a focus on social classes and manners based on Confucianism, which was the ideological foundation of China, as a political system. And in the latter half, the people suffered huge confusion and turmoil during the Japanese Invasion(1592~1598) and Manchu War(1636~1637), which ultimately led to practical science that later affected clothing.
The skirts during Chosun can be categorized into covering skirts, skirts as formal dress(Seuran, Daeran, and Jeonhaengut skirts), underwear skirts(Mujigi, Daeshum, and covering belt skirts), and skirts worn everyday or by Ginyeos according to the form characteristics. The skirts found in relics and genre paintings were analyzed to understand how they were applied in modern times.
Skirts were divided into five shapes and their shapes in fashion shows and pictorials were analyzed. The first category had embroidery and gold leaf patterns. Although they used to have significance for the patterns themselves, their ornamental aspects are more emphasized as a design element to bring out the Korean images in modern times. The second category includes skirts with strings in the later period, when the jacket became smaller and the skirt bigger. The skirt accordingly got to have a belt, which was both functional and ornamental. The third category uses the Geodeul skirt and creates a silhouette much observed in the Ginyeo clothing. As the hem was fastened up high, the underwear was exposed. The fourth category includes skirts with various ornaments such as trinketry and hairpins, which served to highlight the fashion. And the fifth category includes skirts using Mujigi skirts, which worked to emphasize the bottom and made a silhouette of a urn upside down.
Using those five categories of skirts, I created my own works. I tried to promote the superior nature of the Korean design in harmony between the traditional clothing and modernity and differentiate it from others by making use of the expressive methods and form characteristics often observed in modern Hanbok.
