The purpose of this study was to understand the ambivalent consuming behavior of female consumers in their 20s and 30s related to fashion goods and to examine their lifestyle and clothing consumption values.
The subjects were the female consumers in their 20s and 30s living in Seoul, Korea. The survey was conducted from May 1, 2008 to May 20, 2008 and 452 responses were used for data analysis. Cluster analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe-test, and χ2-test were used to conduct data analysis using SPSS 12.0.
The results of the study were as follows:
First, Cluster analysis was used to segment consumers, the subjects were largely divided into 2 different groups according to their ambivalent consuming behavior. Those groups were called by followings: The ambivalent groups include Luxury bags - Mid and low priced clothes purchasing group, medium ambivalent group, and heavy ambivalent group and the non-ambivalent groups include Luxury goods purchasing group, Mid and Low priced goods purchasing group, light user group. And these segmented characteristics of consumers were examined by demographic characteristics, lifestyle and clothing consumption values.
Second, the study examined demographic features between groups depending upon ambivalent consumption and differences appeared among groups based on many factors, such as age, level of education, monthly clothing purchasing expenses, social class, and monthly income.
Third, the dimensions of the lifestyle of the women in their 20-30s were classified into 6 factors: Fashion-interest, Value-oriented, Materialism, Economy-oriented, International sense, and Digital-oriented. When looking into their lifestyle by groups, they showed significant differences in the Fashion-interest, Value-oriented, Materialism, International sense factors. The heavy ambivalent group showed higher scores than the light user group in the factor of Fashion-interest, Value-oriented, Materialism, International sense.
Fourth, the dimensions of the clothing consumption values of women in their 20-30s were classified into 5 factors: Social-conspicuous value, Distinguishable-individuality value, Practical-functional value, expressive-aesthetic value, and confirmative-fashionable value. When looking into the clothing consumption values by groups, they showed significant differences in Social-conspicuous value, Distinguishable-individuality value, and confirmative-fashionable value. The heavy ambivalent group and Luxury goods purchasing group showed the highest scores of the Social-conspicuous values. And the heavy ambivalent group showed the highest scores on both Distinguishable-individuality values and confirmative-fashionable values while the light user group showed lower scores.
