Paper, brush, Chinese ink and ink slab are the essential for literary men and their importance is well expressed in their other names of 'four friends' or 'four treasures.' They were greatly contributed to the development of various arts and beauty and literary men who used them have pureness like Taoism in their appearance and Confucian elegance in their true character. In this article, their features, historical origins, kinds, how to make, methods to select good materials, how to keep are comprehensively researched.
The four precious things have been served to create and record the Oriental culture of paintings and writings and they also have artistic aspects. They are made of natural materials and by handicraft, furthermore functioning as excellent artistic works themselves. Artists of the Oriental world put importance on the meaning of the 'four friends' and could build up their world of art with them. So it has been naturally required that the Oriental painters should be equipped with a sense of discrimination for good materials and especially get well accustomed to the features of each 'friend.'
The development of the Oriental paintings closely depends on the study and development of the four precious things of the study. The current situation, however, does not comply with it, even deteriorating. Artists are only pursuing convenience and are no longer using Chinese ink and ink slab, consequently leading to a sharp decrease in demand. And the number of skilled workers making the four precious things is decreasing and finding good materials becomes more and more difficult as well.
The materials used in the Oriental paintings should develop in harmony with the pursuit of the Oriental art mentality. Understanding of materials should be achieved before painting or writing. Good materials will guarantee without doubt beautiful works.
The Oriental men have strengthened their body and soul in the harmonious and friendly relations with nature and then developed their arts. The oneness relation between men and nature is a basic mentality for the Oriental world and is background of the Oriental arts. It is thought that the four precious things of paper, brush, Chinese ink and ink slab present well the mind of literary men of the Oriental world.
