Some of advertising-related color design studies up to date have dealt with possible changes in perceptive and emotional attitudes as a function of expression types and product images that can attract consumers' attention, but there have been few studies dealing with group-based analysis on consumers' color preference and purchase motivation. For marketing, color stimulates consumer group's needs to purchase something and becomes a major component of product images, so it is important to carefully investigate consumers' color preference within various changing factors and deliberately consider efficient and systematic color strategy.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to focus upon color and monotone(monochrome) magazine ads of domestic women's apparel brands to compare and analyze consumers' color preference and purchase motivation by age, occupation and specialty, so that it can provide reference data on characteristics of woman consumer group and thereby explore possible ways to make ad marketing strategy for apparel ads with magazine according to promising color strategy.
In this study, total 60 women in early 20's to late 30's and residing in Seoul were asked to join a questionnaire survey for the purpose of empirical research in reference to related bibliography and prior studies, and any data collected from the survey were compared and analyzed to one another. This study consists of the following contents: Chapter 2 refers to theoretical backgrounds. Based on relevant reference and survey, this chapter dealt with characteristics and roles of magazine ads; discusses color preference in color and monochrome ads; investigates concepts and prior studies of consumer behaviors and purchase motivation; and analyzes actual profile of domestic fashion brand market. Chapter 3 analyzed consumers' purchase behaviors and purchase motivation of young women in 20's and 30's from 2005 to 2008. Chapter 4 introduced color and monochrome ads of ‘TIME' and ‘SYSTEM', two domestic women's apparel brands at moderate or high price, which all fall within same pricing zone and are characterized by reflecting popularized trend coloration on color design. Based on these two brands, this chapter compared and analyzed group characteristics of woman consumers by means of empirical data obtained from color preference analysis and purchase motivation survey. As a result, this study could come to the following findings:
According to analysis on woman consumers' color preference and purchase motivation of color and monochrome ads, it was found that age 26 ~29 group, white-collar service group and general group showed relatively high color preference in color ads. And it was found that age 36~39 group, other jobs group and design-specialized group showed relatively high color preference in monochrome ads. In addition, it was found that age 26~29 group and white-collar service group showed relatively high purchase motivation in color ads, but neither general group and design-specialized group showed any purchase motivation in color ads. And it was found that age 36~39 group, other jobs group, professional group, general group and design-specialized group showed high purchase motivation in monochrome ads.
According to analysis on purchase motivation depending on sociodemographic characteristics, it was found that age 36~39 showed relatively high show-offishness, but there was no significant difference in show- offishness depending on occupation and specialty. Moreover, according to age-based analysis on purchase motivation in ‘TIME’ and ‘SYSTEM’ as brands discussed herein, it was found that influential factors on purchase motivation were represented primarily by design/style, which was followed by color and match for one's own images. But there was no significant difference in purchase motivation depending upon occupation and specialty.
Summing up, this study analyzed color preference and purchase motivation of each woman group in the 20's to 30's from various viewpoints, and it is concluded that age 26~29 group, white-collar service group and general group have relatively high color preference and purchase motivation in color ads, while age 36~39 group, other jobs group and design-specialized group have relatively high color preference and purchase motivation in monochrome ads. Hence, this study has its implications in a sense that it provides useful data for analyzing differences in group characteristics and needs among woman consumer groups and forecasting potential planning concepts based on market segmentation in regard to color applications.
