This dissertation approaches Yu Jae-gee, who had the initiative and took participation in the rural movements during the Japanese ruling period and liberation from it. He was a leading member and founder of a Christian evangelical movement of cooperatives in the rural communities while Korea was under Japanese government.
Yu Jae-gee is especially a significant figure who reflects the dynamic development and changes in the Korean modern and recent age. His life can be regarded as a searching process for self direction in various ways in the rapidly changing situation. Jesus village movement for a new society, which he spread out those days, clarifies his efforts to evolve and demonstrate Christian approaches to agrarian problems.
The achievements of his life time contributions can be divided into two periods: during Japan's governing Korea and after Korea's emancipation from its ruling. During the colonial period, Yu Jae-gee's activities focused mainly on the areas such as Daegu city and Gyeongbuk province. Particularly in the 1910s he received Christianity and deeply understood a stream of nationalism. In the 1920s through education in Gyonam school and studying in Japan he became a moderate Christian socialist who is based on the rural communities. At first after coming back from Japan he devoted himself to evangelical movement and enlightenment for churches in the rural areas through researches and tours. Since then he organized the Christian Association for the rural communities and developed the Jesus village movement. In the 1930s mainly participating and engaged in the movement, he presented himself as a rural enlightenment and evangelical activist.
After liberation, his influential areas were expanded to the capital region and the movement began to be evolved more systematically beyond the boundary of Christianity. The Jesus village movement through the group named Brothers for Revival Korea is a good example on which Yu Jae-gee particularly emphasized in this period.
The theological and intellectual conception that Yu Jae-gee conceived for the Jesus village movement was meant to be a self-sufficient, Christian rural community that maintained a standardized economic life and that were based on the evangelism armed with the spirit of Christian love and sacrifice. It sought peasant land ownership - that is, only those who are engaged in agriculture possess land - and anti-feudal, anti-profit, and anti-monopolistic economic principles. The Jesus village movement represented a pro-peasant position in its approach to the solution of agricultural problems during the colonial period. The movement was also conceived out of a desire for social reconstruction for the sake of poor peasants on the basis of universal, social evangelism. He believed that the movement would make it possible to expand the Jesus village to the nation wide level and to establish it worldwide. Therefore, the village movement was believed to be a combination of Christian rural movement and social reformative movement with close relation to the difficult situation of reality.
The aim of the movement lies in the construction of Jesus village combined with economic self-sufficiency for the peasant class and Christian rural evangelism. The method for establishing the village was to try to achieve an increase in productivity and an improvement in living standards through cooperative unions. In order to make his plan realized, Yu Jae-gee emphasized on the cultivation of rural Christian leaders supported rural evangelical schools whose purpose was to innovate the rural communities and construct a new nation.
On the basis of establishing Jesus village Yu Gae-gee performed cooperative unions, women movement, young men movement in the rural communities, and introduction of technical skills into rural areas. All these his life time dedicated efforts had a great influence on the Korean rural communities and national innovative reconstruction.
