The purpose of the study is to find how male elders put the meanings in their lives, how they prepare for their current lives and oncoming deaths, and how an individual’s growth process relates to the science of nursing through the conversation about their experiences of a process life and death. The first specific question of the study is “what were two male elders’ experiences of life and death?” Moreover, there was the second question: “what are their thoughts about meanings of life and death?”
In order to understand the study participants’ experiences of life and death, the study utilized Narrative Inquiry. For two participants, there were interviews with each participant for one to one and half hours once a week; these interviews lasted for about eight months. Methods of data collection included depth interviews, notes, research diary, participant’s personal writing, and scrap. The method of analysis included explaining participants’ each story in terms of the study question and repeating a process of analysis and interpretation in order to find the meaning that could include all the narratives.
Two participants of the study were Mr. Jung and Mr. Kim. Being born in the Christian family, Mr. Jung, who is 74 years old, was used to be a high school teacher. Having three daughters, Mr. Jung lives with his wife in a suburban of Gyeonggi-do. Mr. Kim, who is 67 years old, seceded from Religion A in his late 40’s, which he had participated since he was 15 years old. In addition, he has worked as a taxi driver for 6 years. Having two sons and one daughter, Mr. Kim lives with his wife and an unmarried son in Seoul.
The following is an abstract of the study.
When the processes of participants’ lives were organized into meaningful stories, stories about Mr. Jung’s life and death were “the process of Mr. Jung’s life,” “meaningful people: grandmother and a kindergarten teacher,” “a vocation: a passion for a teacher,” “war and disease: realization of essence,” “life after a retirement: leave and depart,” while the stories about Mr. Kim’s life and death were “the process of Mr. Kim’s life,” “Life of Religion A: I who is not myself,” “life after Religion A: confront with a change,” “death of the family: expectation of the natural end of the life,” “religious death: fateful decision for resurrection.”
Life of salmon that has a special instinct is a metaphor of the meaning of life and death of Mr. Jung. The metaphor highlights that Mr. Jung has a clear definition of life and death regarding what he is born for, how he has lived, and where he is able to return. Just like a returning instinct of salmon, which is born in the egg in freshwater, becomes a fry, lives in an ocean, and returns to a freshwater for a next generation.
‘During an “egg stage,” when Mr. Jung was born, he gained a hope, which is necessary for maintaining a life, through the love and stimulus from his grandmother. During a “fry stage,” he prepared to live a life as an adult after he acquired a new identity through his previous experiences and morals. As a “life in the sea,” Mr. Jung diligently lived his life as a believer, a teacher, and a head of the family; just like a “salmon that returns to a freshwater,” he interpreted his life as a diligent volunteer who worked for a purpose of a life given by the God.
Through his experienced process of life and death, Mr. Kim made a metaphor of the meaning of life and death as a “life of butterfly” that dreams of another stage of life. This metaphor highlights Mr. Kim’s desire to live as a butterfly that flies freely around the world after it transforms into the butterfly without changing its true nature. Mr. Kim hoped not only to free himself from religion, which had dominated his life, but also to choose his own life in order to live his life with a freedom.
The religious background the elders had and their masculine myths played important roles in the experience about process of elders’ lives and deaths of the study. Through the study, the participants had a chance to retrospect their past lives and find meanings of their lives by talking about their experiences about life and death for a long time. Also, these experiences made new plan and hope by affecting future experiences.
Hence, the study, which makes male elders’ lives and deaths more understandable, will be able to help experts in hospital and local community to have more meaningful treatment, and it can be utilized as a holistic nursing intervention by improving the quality of elders’ lives and their deaths.
